Hi Rajesh,
Wish you all the best in your new job. I am happy to see that you understand the need to be a team player. One of the most important things that youngsters need to understand when joining any company is that individualism gives way to team work when you work in an organization. Also remember one thing it is your attitude and not your aptitude which will decide your altitude!! So have a good attitude. You might also want to check out this article on my blog:

Be a nice and fair guy, and treat others like you would want to be treated yourself. Don't let them do all the work, always be honest and so on. That should take you a long way already!

First of all congrats for your job.
Well, corporate world is a complex one and one really has to play smart to remain in the groove.
Team Player' is not to say 'Team dependant'.
As an individual, I would like to think that I am a team player as I work work with others, and don't have any major personality defects. This is not to say that I don't work autonomously some, or even a lot of the time.
If you are not a team player is to suggest that you don't share Company and/or team ethos, goals and virtues. Not sure that being considered a "Cancer" by my manager is a good thing, nor would it be condusive to a happy and progressive work environment. Let alone my career.
Is being a 'Team Player' necessary? No.
Is being a 'Team Player' overrated? Most definitely not.
If I were to hire a new incumbent, they would certainly be a team player that shares my business' values and ethos. Does this mean that someone who is not a team player is unemployable? No, but their options may be restricted.
If I acquired a team with someone whom is not a team player, and was considered a "cancer" to the team; then I would manage him/her out of the team and the business.
I hope this has been comprehensive, and addresses your question succinctly.

Working in groups is almost unavoidable today,As per my opinion Specific and clear communication is the key to successfully working in groups, whether for short term or long term project/Job.The very first thing is "know each other" If you're going to be working in a group with other people for any extended period of time spend a few minutes talking with them.Try to listen each other, and encourage each other,Deal immediately with conflict as it arises. If you are a leader in a team or group then divide project work in parts and assign responsibility to each group member as per their qualification and skill.
