My eight year old daughter has been bugging me about getting her own dog for some time now. I am really hesitant to give in to her wishes because we already have a beagle and a pug in our house. So I kept on giving her excuses, gently reminding her that taking care of a dog is a big responsibility.
Several weeks passed and I didn't hear anything from her. I thought I finally convinced her. Until one day, her aunt who is vacationing in the Philippines gave her a two month old shih tzu.
Oh! I couldn't explain the joy it brought to my daughter when she saw the tiny creature. With her face all lit up and her arms outstretched, she said, "I feel like crying, mama. I'm just so happy." Then she finally held the little puppy and hugged it as if it was the most precious thing in the world.
That is an experience that I wouldn't forget as a mama. Seeing how happy my daughter was is nothing compared to everything that is in my material wishlist.
Right now, the puppy stays with her in the room and she takes care of it like a real baby. Honestly, I want to say, "I'm so happy, I can cry." :-)
By the way, the new member of our family is named Casper!

Have you started taking bets how long it will be till the excitement wears off and you have to yell at her to take care of her dog? lol. That is what we would do in our house. We have two lab dogs that are under a year old and when we got the first one our kids actually fought over who go to feed him and who got to take him out to pee. Now if we ask them to feed them we hear "Do I have to do it?" lol. Our oldest wanted a kitten so we got her one as a bribe to try soccer because she was terribly shy. They don't really help taking care of it either, but they still fight over who gets to hold it. I understand what you mean about the feeling you get to see your child so excited they could cry.

Well in all fairness to the kids thats just exactly the way we are too. We want a brand new car and during the first few weeks we are so excited about the car we buy accessories, clean it often make sure no one eats in it and a few months later you have to drag us to vacuum it and maintain it like before. Your kids just want the affection that the pet gives them, they are willing to handle the other stuff but of course that only lasts for a while. Also, if they see that it takes thier mom a few hours to finally get up to wash those dishes piling up, they may have a tendancy to be lazy with thier chores as well. We do have to lead by example.

Casper... what a cute name for a canine pup! I can hear the joy in your words and it brings a knowing smile to my face. You brought back memories of similar moments I experienced with my son when he was a wee one. There's nothing like the joy of our children to brighten our lives. I'm happy for you both!

I think the fact that you didnt give in right away was one of the reasons she appreciated the puppy so much. If given the choice I would have made her responsible for the other two dogs for about a month and after seeing her take that responsibility by herself for that long period of time, I would be sure that she could do just fine with one of her own. I am glad that things turn out great for you guys!
