Any way to reduce cat litter mess?

My orange tabby is the greatest cat, but such a little piggy! He makes such a mess with the litter. I've tried using the trays you can get at pet stores. I even bought a special litter box that is essentially a rubbermaid bin with a hole in the top that is supposed to reduce litter mess. It helped a little, but he still manages to make a mess all over! Any advice?

Well, for me, I have given up on looking for the best litter box or clumping sand because eventually cats love to dig. What I just did was to find a place in the house where it's easy for me to clean up my cats mess; if you can place it inside your bathroom that would be great.

Since you already have the rubermaid hooded cat litter box the only other thing that may help is a mat right outside of the opening to the box. Since this is the only place he could possibly be throwing the litter out, at least it would be on the mat and also if he has any on his feet when he exits the box it will be caught there also. Other than that the only other thing I could think of would be a cat litter pellet. It is like regular litter but heavier. Would be harder for him to kick it out.

Use a clumping cat litter. It doesn't break appart as easily, and it makes less dust and mess. Keep a ruber tray under the litter box to help keep it off the carpet, even if you have a roof-top litter box. Keep it clean. Also try using half as much litter. You'll have to change it more often, but the less litter the less mess. The cats have an enclosed litter pan with a "roof" and they hardly scatter litter. Can't same for the abuse the walls get though. Though despite what you might do, you'll just have a messy kitty.

If your cats wouldn't mind, you could try the outdoor carpeting that looks like grass. It's plastic, but the little "blades" kind of stick up and the litter would fall inside. You would be able to pick it up and shake it outside.

I have tried everything to cut down on the amount of litter tracking. I have four cats and they all have different litter habits. It bothers me when I find litter in my bed, especially. One of my cats actually kicks the litter out the door to the box!

As I was saying...lol...I like to have a kitty door so that they have free access to the outdoors and then I don't have to keep a litter box. I had one and it got broken so now I'm having to save up for another one. Of course, then I have to contend with them tracking dirt in from the outdoors but that's a little easier to deal with than kitty litter.
