do your dogs come when you call them?

Everybody knows that "come here" is the most important command for a dog to learn. Everyone wants their dog to come when they call them and they want them to arrive quickly. But how many of us can tell "my dog allways come on command"? I can tell that my first dog allways came when I called her name. In fact, she was almoust all the time near me, and there were rare cases when I really needed to call her. But when I did call her, she came quickly and gladly. But I can't tell the same about Binne. She knows the meaning of word "come", because sometimes she comes without hesitation. This happens when we are alone, and there are no distractions. But, when distractions appear, Binne seems to be deaf. She doesn't hear anything I say! But she is only 6 and a half months old. I hope things will change, and we're working on it. How about your dogs? Are they deaf when you call them, too?

our dog is sort of selective. weird. most of the time, he comes when we call him. but there are these times when he totally ignores us even though we're already right in front of him. choosy dog.(@_@)

I know what you are talking about... Binne doesn't move a muscle when she is concentrated at other things than me. I called her name, I whistled, I put a little jerk on the leash... but nothing! In a moment like this, it seems I don't exist for her any more. But she is still a puppy. I hope she will outgrow this lack of attention to my commands.

well i guess your puppy i still getting used to being a household pet(^_^) i know she'll grow up to be an attentive and playful dog like the other one you have. but our dog's case is different. he's been with us for almost 4 years. sometimes he just gets into this lazy mood. but we're fine with it. we're getting used to his reactions too. and we can somehow tell whether he likes to fool around or not, so we just let him doze off when we see that he's not in a playful mood.

Thank you for your encouragement! I hope Binne will become a dog like Nera. It really is a different case with your dog. I thought you were talking about a little puppy. For an adult dog, it is not unusual to have lazy moods.

My dogs have selective hearing, lol. They always come when called, only if it suits them! Usually, there are no problems when it's mealtime. But when there are other distractions, it's a while different story, prepare to be ignored! The best "follower" would have to be Coco, my little girlie Miniature Pinscher. I feel like she's the one most attached to me. Next is Gunner, our oldie Labrador Retriever. He's the most well behaved one, but when he's sniffing something, he's deaf! Sundance, the hyper Golden, and Milo, the smaller MinPin, are the worst. When they are distracted by strangers or other things, nothing can stop them!

How different characters of dogs you have! Don't they all came when you call one of them? Or this happens only at the meal time? lol It seems to me that Milo and Sundance are independent dogs. They act the same way Binne does. ^.^ Have you ever taken them to obedience clases?

Oh, Athena, it seems we are in the same boat. We have to work on this, otherwise it could become a real problem. Binne is six and a half months old. What age is your Kira?

yes they do. They both come when I call them by their names. They only respond to their names. When I call the other, only the dog with that name runs. :)

It means you have a special relation with your dogs, haven't you? I hope one day Binne will come to me running every time I call her.

My dog is so close with me, I ever hear people say that the dog is very trusty and truie heart animal. They always faithful with the people that became his master or his friend. I never doubt it, so I always take care my dog like my own family, and I never forget my lovely dog.

Lucky you, Kazegatana! It seems to me your dog really loves you. Probably he isn't a puppy any more, and as an adult he knows what's the best for him. But how were your dog when he was a puppy?

I'm sure she does that. But my question wasn't about dogs greeting their master when they come home. I asked you if your dog come when you call her. Like she is playing with another dog in the doggie park, and you call her. Does she allways come in a situation like this?

I whistle when I like my dog to come to me. Then I say her name. Then she comes at full speed and even hits me with her tail.

You are so lucky! I've told you already, my other dog also used to come when I called her. So I know how it feels to have a dog that comes at full speed when called. What age is your girl? For how long do you have her?

My dog comes when she is called but at times she just ignores me when she does not want to come and turns her head away. It looks cute lol reminds me of a little child but then her trainor says that should be corrected because it means that she is trying to tell me she is the pack leader and she will have behavior issues when it is not corrected. I think your Binne is not deaf just do not really understand the word come. I suggest you look up youtube dog training videos it will surely help you.

I don't think Binne is cute when she doesn't come. Because it may be a life threatening situation like being on the sidewalk and trying to cross the street, or being on the edge of a cliff (when we go on hiking). She must allways stop what she is doing and come when I call. I don't beleive in the "pack leader" theory, Binne doesn't come because she is distracted by the environment, not because she sees herself as the pack leader. I think I know what to do to teach a dog how to come, I hope it is only a matter of time until I can tell "Binne allways comes when I call her".

My dog used to be very good when it came to this, but lately he has started to ignore me more and more. So I guess I need to go back to training him, which for me seems a bit strange, since he used to be so well behaved for his first 1.5 years. I don't know why he decided he can ignore me all of a sudden...

I don't think this happen all of a sudden. Maybe he started ignoring you some time ago, and you didn't notice. You really need to go back and reinforce the call command. A dog must come imediately when you call him, and I'm sure you know that. What about the other commands? Does he ignore you when you give him another command or it happens only with "come"?

At our farm, we got a lot of dogs. And actually, when we use to call just one of them each and everyone of them will run to you and kiss you all over. ^.^ anyway, during the night when they are all resting and not very playful any more I tend to call each one and they response. I don't think our dogs are deaf if this is the case. you know what? maybe binne got used to being called out by "come". Since she is still young, why not try to call her "Binne, come!" not just "come" or "Binne". Also try to look if her ears are clean, sometimes huge fleece lives there. if these doesn't help try consulting to a vet and if confirmed you could just try to teach her hand signals, although you can't call her now if she's not seeing you. good luck with your dog! ^.^

Niairen, it seems all your dogs love you very much. I try to imagine a lot of dogs comming and kissing you all over! I think maybe I can get used to it ^.^ Thank you for the tip. But I don't think Binne got used to be called out by "come", nor she has a problem with her ears. That's because she still come immediately when there are no distractions. Our problem is to learn how to ignore the distractions. I hope she will concentrate more when she become an adult. Otherwise, we will really have a problem! Thank you anyway!

Hello inu1711 My dog always comes when I call her. Even if she just sees me looking at her, she will come to see me. Sometimes this makes me sad for her because I can see that she is tired and resting, and I am looking to make sure that she is comfortable and well. But if she sees me looking at me she will get up and come to me. I have to sneak peeks at her so as not to disturb her. My dog seems to live for my voice calling her name. She never hesitates to come to me when I call. She is a great companion and a dear, sweet, friend. Peace
