Because of my degree...

Because of my degree, my finances improved dramatically. Being the breadwinner in our family, I am thankful for my degree, being the ultimate factor why I can support my family. My degree gave me an increase in salary and change in title. The financial gain allowed me to support my brother's education, have my credit card applications approved, and to treat myself to material things every now and then. My degree also earned me respect from my colleagues, relatives and even people I don't know, without even asking for it. My degree gave me many opportunities to earn and learn at the same time. How about you? What are you thankful for, what are the things you gained/achieved because of your degree?

Hi arystine. I would like to offer a different view about 'my own degree'. You know where I come from, so I would like to say that I used to feel the same way about my education. I wasn't the best at school, but I knew how to work it so I could get a job, get a some experience, and get a few salary increases. Then I moved to where I am now. I was surprised to realize that the people here don't put much stock on degrees considering where I got it. So, I had to be creative. I sent it out to get 'evaluated'. This evaluation got me into the door. Now, people I work with don't care much about my degree, they only care that I got through the door, that I am here. Shows how different worlds could. In any case, I'm still proud of my degree. I might not be here without it.

It's good to hear that you've been so fortunate after acquiring your degree. I finally got mine a little over a year ago and I haven't been so fortunate. I think the main factor is which type of degree one gets. Not to say I don't appreciate my degree, I think attending college was the best thing I've ever done :) but it's also important to have concrete goals and expectation on what's going to happen after earning a degree, which I didn't. I have a good job, but it's not what I'd like and I could do better; I'm actually going to start looking for another job that would better suit my degree. Would you happen to have any advice?

Hi keiros. Thanks for the response. Yes, I have been fortunate. You see, I earned my law degree last year and passed the bar examinations. These changes gave me so many opportunities and allowed me to earn more. However, being the breadwinner, I don't enjoy much my income because I have so many bills to pay. But it's such a nice feeling to be able to provide for my family. My advice for you... You're thinking of searching for another job, right? Well, it wouldn't hurt. Especially if the job that you'll find is one whose job description is related to your degree. I think it would be an advantage since it would be an application of what you have studied, after all. :-)

I think my degree has less to do with where I am now than where I graduated from. I'm one of the many Filipinos who are underemployed. Happy with my paycheck though and I don't think I would have easily sailed through the doors of the company I am working with if not for finishing a degree with my Alma Mater.

Hi mynestegg. I agree, it would be difficult to find a work without a degree. Whatever the salary is, it is an advantage to have a stable job than to merely rely on business or be self-employed. Thanks for the response.
