I was asked for several dollars by a poor man today

When I was waiting for a bus at the stop, a man came to me and asked me if I had several bucks for the bus. I gave him becasue I think he looked poor.
Before I came to US, I was told I'd better prepare some small money in my wallet, in case someone would ask me for money if I walked on a road or something. If you don't give them money, they will do something bad to you.

well a lot of people here ask for money. but the problem is that there are so many people who keep on asking. some who are free always will track you if you give them money every day. i don't know know if something bad can happen but usually nothing good ever happens.
