different daily-use voltages in different countries

It is interesting to know that in different countries, the daily use voltages are different. In usa, it is 110 v, in China, 220 v. This also brings some problems for the travel between these countries. Do you know the reason for the difference?

when we are travelling, we always use a universal voltage device for our gadgets and such. In this country we sometimes use 220 v but when you go outside of this country, the surrounding countries use 110v so its a big problem sometimes.
