An embarrassing predicament

Have you ever found yourself in an embarrassing predicament? Yesterday, at the supermarket, I knew I only had limited funds, pension day was two days away, however I miscalculated by about one dollar. At the checkout, I was so embarrassed because of this predicament. The man on the checkout was most considerate, and suggested that if I took one potato out, the total would be within my finances. It is difficult living on the age pension, but trying to survive when you have to send half to your wife overseas if almost impossible. Have you ever been in a predicament?

Yeah, I know what you mean.. things like this sometimes happen. No worries about it, bro.. I think it depends on the cashier..sometimes they are nice and can wait and smile and give suggestions even. But sometimes, they would make this 'can't be bothered' face or looking like they are mildly agitated or something. I always bring my debit card along.. so if I'm short on cash, I'll just pay by card. Last time, it used to be me bringing the cash only and I would miscalculated, and I'd be embarrassed because I never bring my wallet; just stash the cash in my pocket.

The days of not watching how much we spend are long gone, I'm afreid. I have to calculate as I go, and this time my mental arithmetic skills failed me.

I understand your situation and it has happened to me before. If the cashier is polite it is not a big deal because I am sure it happens all the time! I had something similar happen at McDonalds after I ordered my daughter a chocolate sundae; I reached in my bag for my purse and discovered it was gone as it had been stolen! I had no money or credit cards! We had already consumed a meal there and the purse was taken from my bag as I sat at the table! The manager allowed my daughter to have the sundae on the house which was kind of him and I was not just upset but very embarrassed

Hi paula. Actually, the attendant was excellent. As it was early in the morning, I think he could have been a manager, and I can't speak highly enough of him.

Oh yeah, I am in one now. My account is overdrawn because I mailed my electric bill and then found out the atm was out of order and I couldn't make a deposit.

Oh! We don't realize how much we take the old ATM for granted until they are 'out of order.' hope your problem was resolved swiftly.

dear mike,
i sure did. we have here the local jeepneys (public utility vehicles) that we ride to and pro the residence to the office and back. it happened that the office people were so in a hurry to go because of the big rain coming. i closed the office and ran out and took a ride. while i was in the vehicle, i realized that i have left the wallet in my office drawer. now am panicking and getting red on the face. how am i going to tell the driver that i dont have the fare?
when i reached the corner where i needed to stop, i got out slowly without taking a look back. then the jeep just sped away! am saved! the driver thought i have already paid.
gosh! i will have to be more careful next time not to leave my wallet.

Hello Ann. I remember the jeepneys from my times in Cebu. The driver must have been in a hurry, usually money is their main focus. Mike.

yeah, few times i have. i didn't really feel embarrassed , putting back some of the items back to the shelves, because i've figured it that it happens a lot and i think the cashier's used to witnessing that kind of situation happening to anybody. the problem with me is i don't take more money than enough with me when i go out to buy something in the grocery or the department store, it helps me to save that way i won't have to spend too much.

I agree it is a good way of saving, and also have had to replace irems, which is also an embarrassement.

I think that the most embarrassing thing that I had happened to me was when I was in the 7th grade. I was crossing the main corridor to get to my locker. It contains about 3 or 4 wide steps that are in a square that we called "The Commons" area. Rushing hurriedly and carrying heavy books, I fell and hurt my knee about 2 minutes before the bell rang. One of my "so-called" friends at that time laughed and it hurt my feelings because it really did hurt me. But luckily everyone hadn't come out of classes yet... it really sucked.

Isn't it funny how we humans seem to laugh when another gets hurt? That would certainly embarrass a seventh grader.
