Cats are so much easier to care for than dogs. They are self sufficient which makes going on a trip easier. All you need to do is make sure their cat pan is clean, food dish full and plenty of water. They adore their owners with no extra effort required. The biggest problems with cats is when females go into heat that is why it is important to get them spayed or neutered. I personally prefer females because males take off when they smell a female in heat (even if they are neutered). Another problem is they will destroy your furniture unless you get them declawed at a very young age. If you do this your cat must be an indoor cat as they will have no defense from loose animals outside. It is not cruel to make your cat stay inside. I have 2 females that we keep inside and they are content with that.

I've always found cats to be a little pretentious and needy - like a relative who only ever makes contact when they want something. Dogs, on the other hand, are genuinely loving and loyal, fun, and are quick to learn. They also tend to stay close to home, whereas cats like to roam because they require a level of independance that dogs do not. And, lets face it, you do not see many people walking their pet cat.

cats are cheaper to maintain but dogs are more fun to be with. i would say dogs because they are always hungry which means they are more likely to follow you around.
