Secret Singer, Singing Alone

I used to have a marvelous alto soprano, before I had to go on oxygen therapy. Now, I can't quite reach an entire octave, & that sounds raspy & squeaky.
But when I could sing, I used to sing to myself, just to hear the pretty sound. I grew up in a huge forest, & I loved the way it echoed. Years later, in my salad days, I'd often sing just to keep myself company, or, when I sold flowers on street corners, to pass the time. It even made me feel warmer on very icy days. I once sang loudly & at length with no-one but squirrels, when I visited The Queen's Park in London. Had anyone come along, I would have been embarrassed, & gone silent.
I did sometimes sing before people, & they & I both liked it, but I liked best singing alone, where I could really let loose, get into the music.
What I'd like to know is, am I the only one who does this? Or do you?

Well, phooey on 'em! You should still sing, if it makes you feel better. Just put earphones on, pretend you're singing along to a CD, & let fly!

I have not been gifted with a very beautiful voice but I love singing and I could say I could carry a tune. I'm a baritone. I love performing and singing in front of people when I'm with a group but when alone I'm not that confident because I know the quality of my voice. I will sing in front of close friends only and I really love singing alone because that's where I get to create my own versions of popular songs. I get so accustomed singing alone and creating my version so when I sing in karaoke I can't really sync into the original music![](/Content/images/emotes/lol.gif)

I could kick myself for never having tried karaoke! I even had a couple of guy pals invite me, but I suddenly felt so shy! I really don't know why, since I was very confidant of my voice, AND I wouldn't even have had to fret about remembering the lyrics. As I understand it, they're played on a screen in front of you so you can always check!
And now that all I have left is my raspy, thin frog-voice, it's too late!
Let this serve as a warning to all: SING WHILE YOU STILL CAN! Or you might regret it silently, later on! A good life lesson, I suppose. I'd still rather trade my hard-won wisdom for the ability to sing "O Holy Night," or maybe the mad aria from "Lucia de Lammamoor." Sigh...oh well. At least I can still write!

I also sing. I also thought that no one else was unparalleled to me. But while rehearsing for a show (the first of many that I'd later have), I found that I can't harmonize was well as I used to. I still can harmonize, but my failure to do so back then was a humbling enough experience for me.
I don't usually sing alone or to myself. I've met a lot of people who sing to themselves even when there are a lot of people with them. It's only lately that I've started to do this. I guess I had to get over myself lol :)

You are aware of the fact that your hearing is a bit distorted by the skull casing, yes? It's the reason why it's hard to recognize your own voice when you hear a recording of it. As you age, & your skull continues to slightly expand, it changes what you hear even more.
Anyway, this change drives people with perfect pitch crazy, because before, when they learned what an A, for example, sounds like, later on in life no longer sounds like an A to them! This is why I'm glad I only have perfect relative pitch. No matter what sound I'm given, I can instantly blend right in. Well, if I still had my voice, I could, anyway.
While we're discussing arcane music trivia, here's another odd fact. Our sense of hearing today is a bit different than it was before our noisy industrial age. That is, we tend to hear things a trifle off-pitch, now. I don't know when musicians realized this, but professional musicians in orchestras began "brightening" their instruments (I think) in the 1800s. That is, what composers once intended audiences to hear would sound muddy or too low on the scale to modern ears if played as actually written. So musicians began tuning their instruments up to a slightly higher pitch so it sounded "right" to our modern (damaged?) ears. That's called "brightening."
Thank goodness for MyLot; I now have a place to dump all my useless trivia! My head was getting too heavy with it all!

Yes, I sing a lot alone, though not tried it in a public place as I know there will be people. I have sung at an audition before, the teacher tried to be nice but I definitely know my voice wasn't any good... so no, I try to avoid singing in front of other... :)

Does it make you feel better when you sing? If it does, then sing to your heart's content! That's what singing alone is all about! Never mind others, or, if you like, go somewhere outside where no-one else will be & sing. I think you'll find it liberating! It always lightens my heart! ![](/Content/images/emotes/happy.gif)

I have always done this. As a child I would lay out under the swingset and sing until the elderly neighbor lady came to see what was dying. My grandmother was surprised to hear me sing, because my older sister was the "talented one" in our family. I will sing solos in my brother's little church, but only in groups in my huge church. In fact no one in my large church asks me to sing. I have in the past woke up singing, some song just gets stuck and runs through my sleep and I sing.

You may recall I put that very trait into the comic strip (Welcome To The Zoo)...you singing as you vacuumed, "Seeee thaaaa U-S-A, in your Chev-ro-let...!"
And there I was in the kitchen, baking bread, singing "Psycho Killer."
Ah...good times, good times...
