Moving day is terrible for pets

In my city, July 1st is considered "Moving day." (It is also Canada day.) Over 90,000 households move on this day alone in the city, with many other people moving in the few days surrounding it. The problem with having a designated "moving day" is that many people abandon their pets when their new apartments don't accept animals. It really sickens me to hear stories of abandoned cats left in apartments (my friend moved into an apartment 3 days after the old tenants moved out and found a cat locked in a closet.) Our shelters overflow with these forgotten pets to the point that the SPCA offer discounts for adopting cats and dogs during certain parts of july.
This really makes me angry! I love my cat so much, I would never consider leaving her behind. I would live in the crumbiest apartment if it meant I could keep my cat.
Does this happen in your city? Would you or have you moved and had to get rid of one of your pets?

I would try to find a good home for my pet if I couldn't take it with me. Especially if you are forced to move you can't always choose the conditions in which you are going to live. What is the point behind moving day? Can you move at any other time in your city?

I am not sure where moving day originated. We can move at any other time of the year, but most apartment leases are 1 year in length and most of them start or July 1st, so it will keep going as it has.
I know we can't always choose the conditions, but many people just abandon their pets without looking for good homes and that is where the problem lies. It's disgusting how some people can be so cruel and just leave their pets behind.
