Being too literal

So last night I went to see a Paul McCartney concert at ATT Park in San Francisco. It was about 58 degrees, just right for my medium light Tigger jacket, and we left early enough so that we wouldn't get stuck eating arena food. Or so I thought. At 5:00, about 30 miles out, I saw an Outback Steakhouse, should have spoken up, didn't. And then we got closer to town and the bay bridge was a parking lot. So we got there less than an hour before the concert. Had a taco at a place outside the arena and a hotdog inside. So much for not having arena food. At 7:30, a photo collage started playing on the big monitors along with a collage of Beatles/McCartney music. At 20 minutes, I really thought it would start. At 30 minutes, I really thought it would start. At 40 minutes, I was beginning to think that either Paul's plane had been delayed or that he was having to take a really slow cr*p or something. At about 62 minutes late, the show finally started. Fashionably late? Hm.... Anyway, this is a baseball stadium, so you can't expect the acoustics to be what they are in a concert hall. And they weren't. Actually, when Paul was singing by himself with not too many instrumentals going on, I could hear him really clearly. But when it was the whole band, not so much. But I got to hear Paul McCartney, in the flesh, sing "Let it Be" among other things. (big dumb grin) It was hard to hear him speak though. I had to look straight at the monitors, at his lips, to get most of the words. These guys change guitars a lot. And he even did a ukelele rendition of "Something" as a tribute to George. He also did a tribute to John, "Here Today", which I had never heard before. But back to the guitars and the acoustics. One of the things I actually heard clearly was when he said that the reason they changed guitars so often was "to show off". After all, they bought all those guitars, what else were they going to do with them. So I post this comment on Facebook, and my uncle the musician (NOT a guitar player btw, a drummer lol) informs me that Paul's just having fun with the audience, and that different guitars have different sounds. Well DUH. I aren't a musician, but I aren't dumb either. lol Do ya think Uncle Duckie was taking things a wee bit too literally there? Do you take things literally when they're not meant that way? I know I do sometimes...

I try not to, but sometimes I catch myself responding seriously and then I realize "oops, that was tongue in cheek" or something...

I like to go with the flow, oh and not aunt flo either ROFL! By the way dawn I'm sooooooooo jealous right now of "But I got to hear Paul McCartney, in the flesh, sing "Let it Be" among other things. (big dumb grin)" That must have been heaving

My otherwise perfect daughter has been the one to take things literally ever since she was old enough to talk back and contradict me. It was a shame that she learned her numbers and stuff so young and that I had a digital clock. I distinctly remember once telling her that it was twelve thirty and we needed to do something and she responded: No it's not it is 12:24, she was about three, maybe four then. Great kid, but mouthy, and accurate.

I saw Paul at the Astrodome before they tore it down. the acrostics weren't good, but could've been worse... Still, I saw him - far, FAR away, but I saw him!!! Got to see Ringo and the All-Stars at a smaller venue, but when everyone stood up and up on the benches, you couldn't see!!!

First of all... WOW!!!! Paul McCartney in person is worth all of the above. WOW. I am so excited for you! And yeah, haven't we all done that. Taken something literally when it seems so obvious to everyone else. ah well. live and learn.

I am guilty of that so much..that is so awesome that you were able to see Paul's concert to bad it was hard to hear though..I guess it would have been nice to have one of the hearing devices they show on t.v...that would have been able to help..I can't wait to see who our town gets to play at the concert in October for the festival our town has.

Some of it was hard to hear, but when he was singing and playing by himself, the sound wasn't too bad, just when the band was really going, then it was hard to hear.

well, yea, different tones and tunings, but i digress. it is too literal, but sometimes musicians can't help but chime in when they see that. a guitarist friend of mine was always pissing off people like that. man..that outback sounds good right about now since you mentioned it.

Who me? Ya, actually all the time. I usually figure it out right after I've already responded or spoken and oh well, then it's too late. Just gives em more material to pick on me for.

I'm guilty of being this way a lot of the time. The closest friend that I have here in Lexington anymore is a real cut up and until I got to know her better than I did at first, I thought that she was always intentionally trying to offend people. However, since I've gotten to know her better, I've come to realize that it is just a part of her personality. I've also learned as a result of being her friend that I can't be so serious and literal all the time.

allow me to borrow this from you... "No, I don't interpret things literally very often. I am able to read between the lines really well. I really amaze my friends with this ability sometimes. They are always telling me I nailed it right on the head." oh...forgot the bla bla bla... don't take it too literally '....let it be, let it be....let it be. oh let it be...whisper words of wisdom...let it beee...'

Wow dawny! You got to see Sir Paul in the flesh! How dam kewl is that! I never got to see him in the flesh (and probably never will)John was my fav Beatle, but loved them all! Paul is beyond incredible and I would love to see him live even if I couldn't hear him too well! And the song "Here Today", that he dedicates to John I saw him do at some concert that was taped and he got all choked up and I cried and I was just watching on tv! Damn, I probably would have screamed just like the "teenager I was" way back when I first saw the Beatles for the first time on "Ed Sullivan"! Damn, you really lucked out!

Ohhhhh - the Paul McCartney concert must have been so awesome to see! I am mostly not too literal . . . but my husband tells me I am sometimes when it comes to responding to him. Probably because I take him seriously and sometimes I can't tell if he's joking or being sarcastic!

I am glad you had good time. I live in Las vegas amd so far wemt to several concerts amd it's true that if they are two people playing guitars they will have with them at least 12 (yes twelve guitars). I did questioned it and was told that you get slightly different sound even if the use the pedals.
