Hi to all,i came over an interesting subject a week or so ago,the topic was ,are many people out in the world stocking food away for hardtimes ,it came out that there are a huge amount of people are already stocking up and conserving products like sugar, rice and grains and canned food and also dehydrated foods like powdered milk for long term conservation ,i am a bit skeptical but i think that these people arent all that wrong because if there is another great reccession around the globe they would survive , but you would need some space to conserve these items and calculate how much for how much time ,thats also another good question, how much for how much time greetings to all, bignik

My boyfriends mother has been doing this for a very long time. She has a basement filled with so much food, I think she can't even remember what exactly she has there. My boyfriend and I are going through a really hard time these days and she keeps saying well you know you can always have food here. She lives in another state and last year when I went to visit it was difficult getting around her stuff. We weren't going through this bad patch as we are this year. So she has been saying to go over there that she always has food and that we should do the same. I suppose it is wise to stock for rainy days but who has the room for so much stuff. How do we even know it will keep for so long. Maybe I am picky. But if all fails I know I have food over by her...LOL

hi to all ,and looking at these wonderful comments ,i see that it is happening all over ,many canned foods use a date but talking to a friend who works in the industry , he says that before many years ago, there was hardly an expiration date ,and the industry was less , you can say cleaner than today,he said that a canned product can last for up to 5 years, but logically he also says ,what are we going to do if this canned food lasts so long ,he says we must give it an expiry date so we can continue selling our products,he also says this is business, greetings bignik

There are actually religions that teach their members to do this. I knew a family that lived down the street from me and they belonged to one such religion. I will not name the religion, but it is a well recognized and accepted religion. They teach that you must keep enough food for your family for a year at all times and suggest that you stock enough for someone else also. I lived on a boat for years and got used to stocking up for long trips, so I know how to live frugally and store food properly. I do tend to keep a full larder. With the way the world is today it does seem prudent, but with the prices the way they are it is hard to buy in bulk. Shalom~Adoniah

hi my friend, the way is not to buy in bulk ,but to atleast buy products that are air sealed and vaccume packed , even if you buy small amounts at a time like rice or grains or other ,it has a real long term consrevation time, one should also check out there daily consumption on a basis that there is famine, and if you would eat 30grams of rice normaly you should cut it down 6 grams ,everything would have to be rationed to about 80% less than normal, which would be every day life , we do eat more than what we need ,greetings bignik

I'm not sure how much would be needed for an extended period of time. But whatever the amount would be, I'm sure family size & ages would be an important factor. A single mother with 3 small children would need to stock less than a two parent household with three teenagers. I also know friends & family that grow plenty of their own food (fruits & veggies) & some that own their own animals that can be used for food (from cattle to chickens to a well stocked pond for fishing). Granted I am very fortunate in the aspect of having "plenty of room", I also know that not everyone has the room to "raise" their food & therefore stock up their pantries. But I've seen even small yards yield an amazing harvest & varied food variety.

hi ,maybe we should think of stocking more rice and grains and lots of dehydrated products like milk and meat , would take a lot of less space and last a real long time, greetings bignik

My mother-in-law is one of these people. If we are going to have bad weather, she stocks up at the grocery store. I always tell her she is first in line. I am not one to stock up food. I probably should, but i don't

I believe my father also doing that too. I saw him bought a lot of those dried food and canned food at home. Bit by bit, and bit by bit. When the price comes cheap, he would buy more. I just think that he would do that now for the emergency sake.

Woah, that is a nice realization of what people have been planning all around the world. I have never heard of people stocking food away for hard times sake. There is a lot to think about that way. Also, these food definitely have a expiry date. What if the "recession" never comes? The food stocked away will some time expire and I am sure the expenses for those food are different from the monthly groceries. That is a good thing to do so but we have to consider some other things too.

hi ,onething you can remember is , that the military rotate stocks , and the eqaution is , first in is first out , this means that if i have cannedfood 1 in first ,then cannedfood 2 , and so on ,then it means the oldest is first out ,this rotates your provisions without altering greatly the expiry date, greetings bignik
