Does anone cyber school their kids? The husband and I have thought about possibly cyberschooling out two children and I was just wondering what everyones thoughts are on it. One of the questions that I have if anyone knows the answer is if I cyber school the kids and they go the whole way through 12th grade because they are now only going into 6th and 4th but if they graduate from cyber school and get a diploma from there is the diploma as good as an actual public school diploma? I know that a lot of people say that a GED is as good as a high school diploma but in my opinion it isn't and I don't want the kids to be in a situation where htey go the whole way through cyber school thinking that the diploma is as good only to find out when they apply for college or a job that it is not...any help is appreciated =)

I don't cyber school my children, but my older daughter's school did post grades and some homework online. And my son, who has autism, is often given online work to do during school breaks.

I know that with our school we can now go online and check all the grades and homework that the kids have but the homework is still given in school but they just allow us to view it online for if the kids say they dont have any homework or forget their homework in school they can then go online and look it up so they can still get it done for school...thanks for your response dawnald!!

hi froggieslover I just used our mylot search bar to see if I could find whether or not a cyber school is considered as good as going to a physical school and could not get any definite answer. they claim to be practically the same but never come right out and say that the cyber school diploma will be just as good as going to a physical school. Maybe you should talk to some one in the board of education as to whether a degree from cyberschoold will be just the same as one from an ordinary school.

Yes, I agree Hatley that talking with someone from the board is probably the best way to have my questions answered but I also know that most of the times those type of people will tell you what they think you want to hear as long as it benefits them so I was looking for an opinion of someone that has dealt with it to get more of an honest opinion if you know what I mean LOL I have looked online and done a bunch of research and it doesn't look like it is too bad of a deal but wanted to check all resources. This wouldn't be something i would be doing with my kids for years anyhow =) Have a great week Hatley!!!!

Never heard of cyber schooling just home schooling and I understand ther that they have to go to a school to take that big test can think of the name of it. I would really check this out before doing it. ANd really a GED is just as good for a diploma that test takes & hours to do and tehy really have to know what tehy are doing to pass it

I was always told that a GED is just as good as a high school diploma as well but then I have also heard of people that have gotten it and said that it is not as good because they were turned away from certain colleges or jobs because of it. This isn;t something that I planned on during for them until they are in high school anyways so i will have plenty of time to do some more research about it. Thanks for your response lakota!!

We did video school. From 5th to when I graduated early, I was in video school. I'd go to an actual school, and then every class we had, we would turn on the VCR, and we would watch a real teacher teach the class that was being videotaped. Is that anything like cyber school? I mean, is that when one gets on the computer and watches someone teach a lesson?

Yes, this is the same thing other than the teachers are not video taped they are actual teachers that are just in a different area whether it be a different class, building, town or state. You can still ask the teachers questions during the class periods or atleast that is what I understand of it all. I have looked into cyber schooling but not a whole whole lot because if this is the way I decide to go it wouldn't be until my kids were in high school because I feel that that is where they would be more influenced...thanks for your response ambiepam!!

I haven’t had any experience with cyber schooling. I would imagine that the curriculum would be similar to a normal school's but I wonder if the children would miss the social aspect...The qualifications must be recognised by the education department and I guess that is what you are investigating at the moment...I wish I could be more helpful...

I think that it has its pros and cons and I know that the social aspect is one of the cons but I also have it as a pro because while they are not open to the different friends, it also keeps them away from those friends that could potentially get them into trouble with bad things. I think that cyberschooling is eventually going to be the way that all students are in school whether it be in our lifetime or not but I am just not sure if I do put my kids into cyberschool of they would be able to get as good of jobs or get into as good as colleges if they would by staying in public type schools. Thanks for response paula!!

Hi froggie I really haven't had any experience myself, but I do know that Pennsylvania offers free cyber school to all Pennsylvania students. I wouldn't think they would offer it if it wasn't a genuine diploma. But the problem, I think, would be in deveoping friendships and social interaction. In my opinion, that's a very important part of school. I realize they would still develope relationships in the community, but I really think they would miss out on some very important social interests. Also, face-to-face discussions would be extremely limited. Not sure I would pick cyber school if I had a chioce.

I know that that is one of the pros about school is the socialization and that is one thing that they would be missing out on with cyberschool but to be honest that is one of the reasons that I am considering cyberschool because with all of the terrible things that kids are getting into now a days I dont want them to be around that type of things so by homeschooling them I can hopefully keep them away from that type of things!! Personally, if I had to raise children today (both of my kids are grown, married, kids of their own...), I would opt for cyberschooling or homeschooling. I feel they can get just as much of a social life being cyber/home schooled as they would in the public schools but without all the peer pressure and other somewhat adverse side effects of being in the public schools. Now, I'm mostly referring to inner city schools because unfortunately, that's where my kids had to go to school and I wouldn't have subjected them to that had there been other choices at the time. My cousin homeschooled all 8 of her kids; the results? One is in the Marines and one of his first duties was in DC guarding the president. Not bad for a GED huh? Two of other kids have graduated college; one works for BMW, another is in Bucknell. All were homeschooled and none lacked for anything. They all have a great slew of friends too! I think cyber/home schooling is what the parents make of it. If the child just doesn't seem to fit in anywhere at school, gets bullied a lot or is really unhappy at school, isn't making friends, isn't doing well in class, and the parents have an opportunity to cyber/home school the child, then go for it. As for building a social life outside of school, if the family has an active social life, for example, church, other groups or associations or they live in a great neighborhood or belong to organizations that have activities for cyber/home schooled kids, the kids aren't going to miss out on much. And yes, Pennsylvania now offers cyberschool education as part of their public school system, so kids can even join in the sports activities and such even though they're being schooled at home. I even suggested it to my daughter for my grandson, but he's really doing well in his school and it's not an inner city school. He really likes it. His "step-brother" however, isn't doing very well but they can't trust him to do his work at home. That's a different story though. LOL I suggested it to my son for their boy when he's of school age, especially if by that time he and his wife have been able to afford for one of them to work from home. He'd be okay in their current school district until he got to high school and then it would be questionable.
