Did you make your own toys when you were a kid?

I definitely tried making my own toys. I had cars made from tin cans with bottle covers as wheels. My siblings and I made our own blowing bubbles from hibiscus plant.

We stewed snails, ants and guava leaves in our very own clay pots. Somehow though we never braved tasting it.
We considered the entire rice field behind our house our kingdom. Back then television and computer games were not that affordable. But, boy, did we have fun!

I didn't exactly make physical toys, but I would invent games to play. Sometimes, it's a cooking game with bits of grass and flowers, with paper boats serving as plates, other times I would organize my cousins and neighbours into teams and give them some scenes to act out. We were outdoors a lot and we would just draw ideas from the things available, be it animals, trees, rocks or scraps of paper, there were no end to our imagination.
Yup, we also made blowing bubbles from soapy water, using our hands as a medium. That was so much fun now that I thought back.

Oh yeah, even when it's raining outside, we can always think up of something to do. Invent games, play cards, punch each other's face...

I was oldest among the lot of them so I'm more of a self-appointed leader.
I remember making kites too, and also drawing cards and pictures to paste on the walls, seems like we can always find something to do.

What a thoughtful person you are. I think ants had a field day around you all the time. If it were me it would be a killing spree. I enjoyed watching ants marching on a line and doing something to disrupt that.
Sometimes I'd put a bug or an earthworm on its path and watch as the poor creature writhes. OUt of curiosity I guess. I thought they can whip up laser swords to protect themselves but it turns out they can't.

And then you find out that they can't die from falling down stalks right? So you pour water over it and see how it fares. That's what I would do.

Actually no, I thought they were survivors and deserve a second chance. I just let them go and find my next guinea pigs.

YES. we have a festival for a god.. whom WESTERNERS like to call the ELEPHANT GOD. we call him the FIRST GOD to be worshiped. ... every year, around August-SEPTEMBER, it is a nine-day long festival to celebrate the BIRTHDAY of this GOD.. GANESHA .. AND, for celebrating that, -------------
all the kids make their own GOD idols, from MUD .. and, along with the god's idol, make a few more idols, toys, etc... that way, they learn and enjoy.

it is sure a very great entertainment, along with a lot of education. I have learnt quite a few tricks with mud craft, and have taught my kids.
now, it is my role to supervise, and teach.
thanks. why don't you plan a holiday to INDIA...?

When I was a child I loved to create my own toys, and I was very creative. I made puppets, dolls or many other things. One day my uncle gave me a lot of old paper that he didn't need anymore. He was going to throw it away, but he decided to ask me if I wanted it, and I turned the paper into dolls. I made many, many dolls. I started with a few and I kept on adding new ones all the time. After a while I had more than 200 dolls and I loved them. I played with them for many, many hours

I guess there is always someone in your family who really knows how to encourage your creativity. You're lucky to have an uncle like that.

I loved to make my own toys as a child. Sometimes my toy inventions gave me greater joy than a store bought toy. It was the best time when inventing a new toy.

Well If I were your parent I probably wouldn't like that, too. But hey that's what are toys for--to play with right?

I'm happy that you had so much fun making your own toys. It takes imagination to turn a big cardboard box into a house my making some windows or a ship or submarine. We made costumes and masks and capes and became superheroes. We made skateboards or scooters out of wood. Thanks for bringing me back to my childhood days.

I came from a not-so-rich family. I only had one barbie doll in entire childhood. I think that's the reason why I never liked dolls. So, what we would normally do is just play hide and seek, copys and robbers or any game that doesn't require any props or toys.
Most of the time I would only watch tv. I'm not really very physical when it comes to play. My siblings would play wrestling and I hated it. I didn't like to be hurt.

i used to play bubbles using detergent soaps, but my father used to have something like leaves from such tree to make a bubble,i just can't remember anymore.i also used to play with my niece nowadays bubbles made of soaps also.
i do try to make an airplane made of paper or boat then start gliding it in water,so much fun!
oh,it really is fun to be a kid, cause you have no problems at all, just playing around and thinking what kind of play to have the next day.

It just feels good to recall those days when we were still kids when everything is just simple even the toys we used were not as complicated compared to the toys of the kids nowadays. I also played or made the ones that you have mentioned, like doing bubbles from plants and flowers and just adding a little soap, making paper dolls and desining its clothes. We also made phones out of cans and also cooking different leaves and flowers. It was really fun playing outdoor games and simple toys rather than just playing in front of computers and watching TV.

Sigh! it really does feel good to recall those days. Most kids don't appreciate the outdoors anymore. Much less creating their own toys. All they have to do is go to the mall and buy new ones. NObody bothers playing with the stuff we played with/

We didn't have that much when I was a kid too. But back then I didn't know that so I seldom felt cheated out of something. Good thing us neighborhood kids can never keep still inside out homes. Eventually, we'd find time to gather around and find something worthwhile to challenge our creativity.
I totally agree that its a happy thing to do.

Hello Abitcurious. I can't remember ever making my own toys but we definitely had more fun than kids do now. Oh yes I remember making rag dolls from old clothes and playing with them. I was more of a tomboy though so I was more in to playing sporty games.

yes i did...as a kid we could hardly afford any toys. We used to use the motor bike tyres to play. We have also tired playing the bearing ring of the trucks. Its a ring which is around 10 inches in diametre. we used to maka an arc of a thick wire and push the ring with it. We used to make a paper ball wrap it with a polythene bag and put a rubber band around it to make it hard. We use to play with it. We used to catch dragon flies and tie a thread around its tail and let it fly....i dont recollect now but we have had lot of fun in childhood.
