Are You Aware Of People Going Through Your Garbage?

IN Guelph we sort our garbage into three different bags. Blue for cans, paper, cardboard, plastic (except bags and wrappers), cans, metal Green for anything compostable Clear for everything else. One of our neighbours has a friend who collects cans, and other things that he takes back to the store, sells, uses, etc, and he's been seen going through the trash out behind the apartment. I know of a lot of people in the world who will throw away bills and papers and things into their blue bags, and if they are aware of people going through their garbage, they would stop and think, as this person could read anything he finds. Years ago I bought a paper shredder. It's something I've always used. Not a single piece of paper leaves this house without being shredded, unless it's a newspaper. If it is a personal paper that I am throwing out, it goes into the shredder. Are there people in your area going through your garbage? How do you feel about this? Do you have a paper shredder. After reading this, might you consider getting one?

Yes my friend danish we also have that kind of people and not just few but there are lots of them. We also segregate our garbage, from Biodegradable to Non-biodegradable because that is one of our ordinance here in our country to minimized waste and also recycle everything that would turn into a source of income. I don't have paper shredder which I must suppose to have one. We have once before but it was busted because in our country we use 220volts of electric current and those paper shredder I had before must have only 110volt to operate. That was being inserted to 220v and the next thing was it burned up and goodbye. But, I am not closing my door to anyone who would be kind to enough donate their old one. Just PM and I would be glad to accept it with my arms OPEN WIDE... Thanks Danish..have a nice day.. Mobhomeir here..

I live in a quiet small town and there isn't that kind of problem here. I burn most of my burnables in my woodstove as tinder but don't really have anything important that comes in, anyway. I'm just dirt poor. LOL

They wouldn't want to be going through my garbage! People would find things that they would not like in my garbage if they went through it.

I know that people sometimes go through garbage, but so far, not mine. We have lots of bags of used kitty litter in there as well. I do have a paper shredder though, and I find it is an incredibly good idea.

I need to get one.....but no one is digging through my garbage.....I have two neighbors who would be all over them if they tried....I just have one garbage can. And I usually don't take anything out until it's time for the garbage truck to show up.

Well, Yes..I knew about it . therefore, I never put any piece of paper in the garbage , which has any personal information..like phone numbers or addresses..or anything like that. Hence,I advice other people to do the same ..as otherwise it may lead to some problem in the future.

I'm aware that people do this, there's not much chance of someone doing it to mine as I keep my bins inside my back garden. It's nicely fenced off and I have lights setup which would turn on if someone was in my back garden. Any important letters I tend to rip into little pieces so that it can't be put back together easily if at all. I won't be buying a paper shredder, I'll just rip it myself.

Yes, I have a paper shredder too since any type of information in the wrong hands can lead to someone stealing your identity ,and you might end up in trouble since this person may go shopping on your behalf by using all your information to obtain credit or who knows what else.

We have these huge containers for the garbage.........blue for recyclables and gray for garbage. Mine sit right outside the door, in front of my car in the car port. There is no one going throught it and they wouldn't find anything if they did. Any paper I put in it is torn up........although I DO have a paper shredder that I don't use that often. I do remember a time years ago.........at least 8 of more, that I looked out the back door at someone going through my garbage.......it struck me as strange since he had on a white shirt and tie. He did not see me there but as I watched, he just took the bag he was going through, put it in his car and left! I didn't have enough time to yell at him OR get a license plate number, but I did think it odd.

This is an excellent discussion, cd! Identity theft is rampant and thieves will stop at nothing to gain personal information about anyone they can. I'm not worried at all about anyone going through our garbage here at the house. We live in the country and back on a private road. Besides, we have to take our garbage to a dump so ours sits in our garage until there's enough to warrant a trip to the dump. (Anything biodegradable goes into the compost bin so the stuff in the garage doesn't get stinky. lol) But, who knows how many people this stuff could come into contact with once it's at the dump? The dump is supervised by a human. Trucks come in to take it to a landfill. There are people working at the landfill. I don't let a single piece of personal information leave this house whole, even just our name and address. I have a shredder and do use it. I also burn some more sensitive things. If it's just one small thing, I'll tear it into such small pieces that no one could put them back together. If it's something like a bank statement or anything with my social security number on it, I'll tear all important information in half before shredding, then put half in one trash bag and the other half in another one. Maybe I'm a bit TOO paranoid but I'd rather be safe than sorry, ya know?

Hi, Yes, I am aware of how some people have the gall to go through someone else's garbage. Looking for recyclable goods is one thing, but looking for papers that might lead them to ones personal accounts is another matter. I too, have a shredder and a cardboard box. Everyday I go through my mail and sort out the junk mail from real. I take everything with my name and address on it out of the envelopes and put the page(s) with my identity on them in to the box to shred later. This is a way that I keep track of what I need to shred and there is no hurry to get to it and there is no fear that I have thrown something away that I shouldn't have. Another way I prevent rummaging through my garbage is, I don't wheel it to the curb until the morning light where everyone can see who is going through my garbage. I know everyone's garbage pickup can be different especially if they live in an apartment or the garbage truck comes before dawn. Therefore, to protect yourself from identity theives, shred, shred, shred. Sometimes I keep the shredded papers to use in delicate packages that I have to mail or put in the bottom of a gift bag. The different colors are pretty.

Well you know the saying another persons garbage is another persons treasure. If someone wants to go through my garbage Id say go ahead. I dont see why anyone would care, other wise it woudnt be garbage to them. So let other people go through your garbage and if they find someone useful godbless.

Yes many people neglect the simple fact that their garbage is being searched. They manage to dump whatever they can not knowing that maybe there are some useful items in that garbage which can be quite useful to other people. By seeing all this one could gain extremely valuable information. Even in computers many just delete and keep items in recycle bin which can be quite dangerous at times if the file present in that bin is sensitive or contains personal information of someone else! Such a technique is called as dumpster diving and can prove to be quite dangerous. People should be made aware of all the deadly stuff which could maybe change their lives.

I live in a small municipality, so I don´t think we have any problems like that - at least yet. But you never know. I tear the addresses in small pieces anyway, but I don´t know if it helps if someone would like to steal my identity. Well, have to hope for the best and be a bit careful..

I live in an apartment now, and we all take our garbage to a great big dumpster. It would be hard to get in, and even if they did, they would have to go through a lot of gross stuff to find anything worthwhile. However, about nine years ago I lived in a place where I was to bring my garbage container to the curb, and the trash people would come pick it up. One morning I came outside, and my neighbor across the street was going through it. He saw me look at him, and hurried back to his house. It really annoyed me. I also caught him peeking in my living room window once. That dude had problems.

yea,we have people that pinch the can bin,and garbage day is also junk day, when we're allowed to put out old furniture or whatnot.they usually leave the real trash alone tho. it's pretty much understood locally any household stuff on the curb is a free invitation, but cans are a big no-no.the city will fine you as they see it as stealing from them.

hi danishcanadian oh yes I learned the hard way regarding papers as I had just tossed them in the d umpster. then some one in my same apartment complex used my address and my name to subscribe to a year of readers digest. seems she waited for the make carrier asked him if he had a magazine for patsy Hatley which is my first name mispelled as I spell it Patsie and use my middle inital M and the idiot would give it to this woman.,the mail carrier did not even know where in our apt. complex this woman lived. okay so I get a bill for readers digest claiming I owed them for two years, I wrote back I do not have a subscription for the readers digest. So the agent reads me my supposed name and address and I ask him how is that spelled then I tell him I do not spell my name that way and I use an M for my middle inital. So he asked me to talk to the postal carrier. I found out that this woman had been getting the magazine by stopping the mail carrier and got the current issue. so we found the woman and the mail carrier informed her she had broke the law using my name and address. I gave her the bill I had and called the agent back and he told me to forget the bill and tear it up.So never again. a paper shredder is what I need. for now I just did not throw anything away with my address on it.

Hi danish Yes, we use a paper shredder. As far as people going through the garbage. Our garbage cans are in my yard. Every week, they have to be taken out to the alley to be picked up by the garbage collectors. I've never seen anyone going through the cans or bags, but there is something else I've observed. If there is anything you want to get rid of, put it out for the garbage man...old lamps, old prinders, old anything, and it will disappear. We had a storm door in pretty good comdition that we didn't need. We put it out front with a FREE sign on it, but no one wanted it. We put it out for the garbage man, and it disappeared. Apparently, people think it is fair game if it is in the alley, but wouldn't pick it up in front of the house. Strange.
