How do the movies compare to their counterparts?

I have had a casual interest in Death Note, and hae seen a couple episodes of the anime, and two of the three live action movies.
I also just started reading the manga, partly as an effort to further my japanese (language).
What I was wondering is, how different are the movies from the anime and manga?
I'm still in book 1, but I get the sense that the movies are the extreme-condensced version of the story. I also thought there were characters named Matt, Mello and Near, but they weren't in the movies? When do they come into the story?

The plot in the movies is quite different from the anime. Pesonally I liked the anime better because I feel it had a greater story with more detail and character depth and a better soundtrack, but the movies added something new too.
Especially the third movie, which is basically a spin of, so it has nothing to do with the manga or anime at all. Still it features my favorite character, L, so it was very fun to watch for me.
I would definitely recommend watching it all!
