What do we do with all the farm animals?

Hm, maybe I should have put this under Star Trek or P.E. Oh well... So Zefram Cochrane takes his rocket ride and finds Vulcans. And the Vulcans will only allow Earth to join the Galactic Federation if we all agree to become vegetarians. And what's in it for us? Cures for heart disease, cancer, AIDS, and most things that ail us. Instant transportation. Space travel. Replicators. Many, many things. And Earth grows a new consciousness and goes vegetarian. Well shoot, we have all these cows and pigs and sheep and chickens and other critters that we have domesticated, mostly for the purpose of providing food for us. What are we going to do with them? Be creative!

Give them all red uniforms and use them as decoys in the landing parties. EVERYBODY knows the guys in the red uniforms get killed by the aliens.

Sconi, do you know a seamstress who can custom tailor those uniforms? Cows are mighty hard to fit.

Ha Ha!!! I was thinking how hard it's going to be to get the chickens to stand still long enough to fit them.

Okay... Well, for one thing, you stop breeding them until you just have a few. Yeah, I know, you have to breed milk cows into having calves so they produce milk, well, we can go with without milk I guess. But you don't have to keep breeding large herds of cows for food. I'm going to guess they don't want horse racing either, so you are pretty much down to horse hobbyists, so you stop breeding lots of horses too. There will be a certain need for protein for some of our pet animals, cats, for example, don't make good vegans... So, one thing with the animals, is you stop breeding them all over the place, and allow them to die off natural deaths, those that die naturally, you can harvest for animals, like cats, that can't go without some animal protein... I'm guessing we would have to allow zoo animals to not breed as well, tho I bet they have way to save low species even if they are meat eaters - like cheetahs...

that's easy! You keep the intact boy animals away from the girl animals, they do it all the time!

We could experiment on them like the insane Dr. Moreau and turn them into humans. I'd use chickens to eat all the weed seeds so the weeds would not be such a problem. I'd use goats and cows to keep the grass cut and to produce some terrific fertilizer for the veggie crops. Hmmm, pigs? Well, they can be terrific companions, just like dogs. Well, similar, anyway. Ducks and geese for their feathers to make pillows and mattresses. Sheep, of course, would still be used to make sweaters, blankets and all other terribly itchy clothing. Hmmm, teach them all to sing and have the world's most unique choir?

I don't think the Vulcans would approve of us turning them into humans. They're not all that keen on humans to begin with, most of them. But I like your other ideas. They can be useful... Sing? Why not... "I'd like to teach the pigs to sing in perfect harmony..." :D

If I recollect correctly, Bones turned Kirk into a Vulcan... or was that a Romulan?... and then back again so maybe we could turn them all into Vulcans? Imagine a pointy-eared chicken.

Nice question... In Tamilnadu, India.. we have a great saying about animals.. I write that in Tamil.. then I translate those wording... "Aadu valarkiradhu Azhagu paakiradharkillai... Kozhi valarkiradhu Konjaradhukku Illai... Rendaiyuma Arukiradharku than...." means that... Aadu(Goat), Kozhi(Hen) we are growing not for showing love and emotions... both are meant for food...

Actually dawny, I think we are overlooking simpler solutions! May be we need to develop some essence or something that makes ordinary fibrous food taste like meat may be. That I think would be cheaper than looking at space for solution. :)

In galactic terms may be we too have a predator who would love to farm us and chop us and pass through those quality processes and pack us and deep freeze us. Or may be they wont bother, just eat us the way we eat some fruits and nuts. :)

Well, the way things are going in this country, we could let them run for parliament. At least we'll know they don't know what they're doing. And they will be much cheaper to keep than the MPs we've got now.

Turn them into mobile furniture? Cows would become cowches. Pigs could be piganos, singing lovely tunes, you know. Sheep . . . we would ride a sheep instead of a Jeep. Chickens would be pest control and strolling fertilizer for our gardens. Actually all of the animals would provide fertilizer, and trim the lawn and we would raise stupendous, spectacular veggies.

If We're not Eating them, and We're not making them deliberately extinct when they're no longer being used for their products and byproducts, then they'll have to be managed and controlled...

I say we just turn them all into domestic pets! Why not!!! They are cute and can be sweet---they could provide us with companionship and happiness just as much as our other furry friends. Just let them stay on the farms and live happy, safe lives!!

I know it's not the most creative answer, but I think it would be the most enjoyable. I believe you can never have too many pets (as long as you can take care of all of them!) lol

Keep them as pets! Your mate Sir Paul keeps sheep and and they all die of natural causes, none are eaten. He's been doing this for years. If he can do it, so can I. In fact, if I had my way I'd start up a huge Animal Sanctuary for the very animals you describe and kids could come down and play with them and f*ck health and safety and washing your hands...they can ride on their backs if they like, I don't care. Haha! Yes, I DO have an over-active imagination at times.

Sounds like my problem on Farmville! I can't say no to animals and I keep running out of room! I have expanded my farm twice and I will be again as soon as I get more Farmville cash! I know this will not solve your the problem you mentioned but at least with the chickens can still be used for eggs and let to roam free! Same with the cattle just like they do in India! Sheep can still produce wool so they can be on farms and sheared every year. Pigs could be used for searching for truffles! I know it is true! So this my suggestions!
