i don't have narcolepsy thank God. but i have some regular occasions when i feel really sleepy and i just can't help but to give my eyes some time to shut. 1 or 2 minutes. till i can take a nap. when i start to read a book, especially the books of my profession or anything that i am not really interested to read. i would feel sleepy after lunch. why i don't understand when i don't feel sleepy after a breakfast, or dinner when it's the same issue of just finished a meal. and worse, sometimes, even if i didn't eat lunch, i still feel sleepy at the same hour when i use to eat lunch. not to mention, sometimes, i really feel sleepy during the sermon of the priest. lol.

In old proverb says after lunch rest a while and after dinner walk a mile and hence the theme is during lunch we use to take somewhat heavy foods and hence for digestion, we have to take some rest.
Usually in the morning when we have breakfast, we already have lots of unused energy preserved in your body. So generally we don't get sleepy. But during lunch we normally take some heavy foods for this reason body needs more energy to digest it, provide necessary substances to blood and carry out waste from it and produce more energy. So whole parts of the body, muscles and organs get busy doing these tasks, which causes a temporary nervous system breakdown and losses control over body. That's why we feel sleepy or a little tired. A short rest can help this time. And after dinner we generally do nothing so body don't need energy to preserve and it's already programed that you'll sleep over night so there's no hurry. That's it. So it's quite normal, don't feel bad for it.
But there's a good scientific explanation of this incident. I read an very informative article on it. It says:
University of Manchester Researchers have found out why people tend to nap a heavy lunch. When people are hungry, there is a lack of glucose, and nerve cells in the brain send signals that keep a person alert. However after lunch there is an influx of glucose, which prevents the nerve cells from sending alert signals and hence people feel droopy.
The University of Manchester team said that when the body needs fuel in form of glucose,it is alert, but when hunger is sated, the body's chemistry stops these alertness signals.
"We have identified the pore in the membrane of orexin-producing cells that is responsible for the inhibiting effect of glucose. This previously unknown mechanism is so sensitive it can detect minute changes in glucose levels- the type that occurs between meals for example," said lead researcher Dr Denis Burdakov. "This may well provide an explanation for after meal tiredness and why it is difficult to sleep when hungry."
Another researcher Neil Stanly said, "We neutrally have a dip in alertness around 2pm to 4pm that happens whether we eat lunch or not. We also do not get tired after eating breakfast because we are on the rising phase of our circadian."
If you feel sleepy after eating, particularly after sweet or bakery products, you are normal. Eating sugary foods causes your brain to make large amounts of neurotransmitter, serotonin, that makes people fall asleep naturally at night.
Eating sugary foods or those made from flour, such as bakery products or pastas (rice, wheat, milk, fruits also) causes blood sugar rises higher than normal. This causes your pancreas to release large amounts of insulin, which drives one of the protein building blocks called tryptophan from your bloodstream to your brain, where it is converted to serotonin that makes you feel sleepy.
Many people can avoid feeling sleepy after eating by restricting foods high in sugar and flour. When it is important for you to be alert, eat food that do not cause a high rise in blood sugar, such as vegetable salads, nuts, seeds, meat, fish and chicken.

very informative! i like it and i really appreciate your effort to help us understand this matter. true enough, just when (usually) we are about to sleep at night, during dinner, we felt like we were so tired at work that we need to cope up with the lost energy, so we eat a lot at this time. although i am aware of it, still it's just so good feeling to eat at night. but i make sure i stay awake about an hour or two after dinner and not to go to bed in less than an hour difference. i am afraid of getting attacked by sleep apnea (can't/doesn't breath during sleeping) which can be caused by a full stomach.

Wow. It seems that your body clock wants to change your sleeping time to after lunch and be a nocturnal or something! lol. Kidding. I think one of the reasons you feel sleepy at a certain time of the day is because you're used to sleeping on that exact hour before. Maybe when you were young, you sleep on that exact same hour. This conditions your body to sleep on that exact hour.
Another reason I think, is because you lack sleep. Maybe you feel like sleeping in the middle of the day because you can't sleep well at night. I suggest that you sleep well in the night, and condition yourself to not sleep in the afternoon. =)

I tend to sleep when I'm very comfortable, doesn't really matter if it's day or night or whether I'm tired or not just when I'm comfortable and warm I will end up nodding off and catching a few ZZZzz I guess.
Some people may do this but then again everyone's different.

I feel sleepy if I am tired or bored. I also feel sleepy if I am sitting or laying down on a really really comfortable position. I would also feel sleepy if someone massaged by body for a long period of time.

The weather is something that makes me sleepy a lot of the time. When the clouds are outside and there is no sun out, I tend to drift away into dreamland a lot of the time. There have been times where it has been dreary outside, where I put my hand on my chin and just slowly nod off. I have to get work done, but there is something about that weather that just puts me under.
Plus there are a lot of times where in school, I can saddled with a boring teacher, who gives those long droning boring drawn out lectures. Lectures that go on and on and on. Where an hour might seems like about ten and I can feel myself aging as the lecture goes on. It is a constant battle. Getting stuck with a boring teacher and dreary weather outside, is an even harder battle. Still those are the things that really make me sleepy.
