Neutering is kinda pointless!

My husband and I got our 6 month old puppy neutered on July 7th. I expeccted to have a somewhat drowsy pup when I picked him up from the vet. Boy was I wrong. They had to hold him so he wouldn't run out the door! When I told the guy that I expected a calm puppy, he proceeded to tell me that it would take a couple of weeks for the surgery to take effect. I told him, "no, I thought he would be drowsy from the surgery." He tells me, "I did too." I didn't want to get him fixed in the first place, and it feels like a waste of money right about now LOL. I know I have to give it time, but I've noticed that this puppy is not ordinary. He's 1/2 bassett, 1/4 pit, 1/4 shar pei. I call him a "sharbassepit." So what is everyone else's take on neutering and spaying your pet? I know it's good for animal control, but he's the only dog we have and stays indoors.

I know what the main point of neutering is, but I was also advised that it may calm him down a little because of the loss of testosterone. My dog is on a leash at all time when he goes out. And if we have the door open, we have him in the bedroom until he does have a leash on. I did have the neutering done on him for the health benefits. I know it may never have any effect on his behavior. I just thought this would make a good discussion topic. Thanks for the comment though.

Ha ha! I imagine what face you've made when you saw your baby running out the door from the vet! I would expect a drowsy pup after the surgery, too. It seems your puppy's energy can't be beaten by an anesthetic!
Don't worry about his energy, it doesn't come from the testosterone, but from his age. I know what I'm talking about, I have a 7 months puppy and she is a bunch of energy, too. And my dog has 100% terrier blood, not only 25% like yours. Probably only his look comes from his basset ancestor, his temperament seems to come from the terrier ancestor. LOL
I hope they will calm down a little with age...
Here is an advice for calming your sharbassepit: if he stays indoors, he uses his energy to destroy and make mess inside. You should try to take him outside for exercise, or only for a long, nice walk. This will burn some of his energy, and he should be more calm inside the house.

Thanks for the advice. When we take him out for a walk, he comes back very very tired. Even when we take him for rides, he's tired. We've been having bad weather here, so we've been playing inside with him. Thanks!

First off, good for you by being a responsible pet owner by getting your pet fixed. Better safe than sorry!
Don't be too discouraged about him still having SO much energy, puppies will be puppies. I can guarantee though, having him neutered will make a difference as he gets older and matures. If you would have wait until he was older and "out of control" and then neutered him, you probably would have seen the difference you were expecting. It just sounds like your puppy is a trooper and is intent on being a happy and energetic guy. :) As he matures and is trained to what you expect of him, he hopefully will settle down, until then, enjoy his ridiculous puppy antics!
