Hey All! It's Opal from NY! I have been a diehard Yankee Fan since
I was a very little kid! I used to watch the games with my Grandpa!
I knew the players, their numbers and as I got older I really
"learned" the game! I was lucky to have had the pleasure of going
to the "Old Yankee Stadium" many times in my life throughtout my
years. I followed all the good stuff and the crazy stuff of
which George Steinbrener was most often a big part! He was loved,
he was majorly hated, but could always be counted on for some
serious controversy. I grew up in the "Era of Billy Martin" and
I think that was George at his worst and Billy too! But, they
say that he was as good and as generous as he was miserable and
mean! So, I say thank you to Mr. Steinbrener for making my childhood
and my adulthood watching the NY Yankees possible and although I
didn't always like you~you kept the team doing what they need to do!
RIP Steinbrener, your antics and craziness will be missed~

Hi Opal! I'm an Orioles fan...my family was from Baltimore and like you, I watched the games with my grandparents or listened to them on the radio when they were blacked out. I am very familiar with Steinbrener though and was very sad to learn of his sudden passing this morning. That man was the heart and soul of the Yankees and I know that he will be sincerely missed by fans and players alike.

Hi spalladino! It's a big deal here in NY, of course! People have
been gathering at the "New Yankee Stadium" all day to place flowers
and stuff and they've been interviewing fans of all ages! It's
been tough to watch some of the old tapes from years back! I
know that there will be lots more and I believe there will be
some kind of Memorial at the Stadium. I haven't even been anywhere
near the new Stadium yet!

I'm a diehard Yankee fan. Well, you know what my e-mail address is - I think you can guess where I get that from. I was sad to see the news this morning on Sportscenter. I'm at least glad that if he had to die, he went fairly quickly after the heart attack and didn't suffer anymore. You know, as much as I always heard people talk smack about him (usually every person who wasn't a Yankee fan - jealousy probably), I was happy to hear people talk about what a giver he was. Philanthropy was mainly what they talked about today. And when all is said and done, I think that is the greatest legacy of any to have.

Hey Jetermeter!lol Of course I know! Who doesn't love the "Captain"?
I am feeling the same way! I wasn't always a fan of his because he
sometimes made it difficult to be, but I am glad that most of what
the media is focusing on his the good things that he did and all the
money that he gave back! They were interviewing people who started
to make a "Memorial Tribute" (as NY'rs do) at the New Yankee Stadium
and I was amazed how many young people who were there and crying saying
it is he "End of an Era" and it is...There will never be another like
him~

tO BE HONEST HAD NEVER KNOWN ANYTHING about him till he passed away & started hearing about some of his antics on the news. Seems as if he was quite a character but a good one. I'm glad u have good memories of him. I'm not really into baseball like i am football & basketball. Guess if Tennessee had a team i would be, lol.

I have been trated the same way, lol. When my oldest son was home we didn't have but one tv so he had to put up w/me but the youngrst had his own tv & he wouldn't watch w/me. I'm a yeller to. I was one of the parents at my sons game that other parents talked about if u get my drift, lol. I'm a big Tennessee volunteers fan, football & basketball. I also root for the colts on account of peyton manning who played for Tennessee. GO VOLS!!

Hi ANTIQUELADY! I am also into Basketball and Football too!
I am a Knicks Fan, although not easy lately and a Lakers Fan!
And of course, a New York Giants Fan! I have always loved to
watch sports and really know how to follow the games. When I
was younger my brother and father wouldn't let me watch the
baseball games with them because I yelled too much! I am still
yelling to this day at the players, referees! I love to coach
from my apartment!lol

Living a LONG way from New York, I don't remember much about the Yankees, that is....until George Steinbrener came along. I remember the theatrics & wacko stuff he did when he was younger. He was the ONLY one crazy enough to fire Billy Martin...not once, but TWICE!!! He believed in the same theory that I do...you get what you pay for. Well. he paid & IT WORKED!!! I now wonder who will lead the Yankees into being the winners that George taught us to expect. HE WILL BE MISSED TERRIBLY!!! My heart goes out to his family & his fans!!!!

Hey LadyM! Actually, I believe he hired and fired Billy Martin
more than twice!lol They were some pair! They were like oil and
water! But, they won games and that's what counted and the
shows that they put on won't ever be forgotten! Now they can
both go at it up there in Heaven! I believe that his sons have
already taken over since he hasn't been well for the last few
years anyway~He will be missed!

Seems this old brain has developed faulty wiring!!! I only remembered twice. But it seems as you're correct, George fired him 5 times. They had a love/hate relationship the likes of which was never seen before or since George took over the Yankees. The sons make have taken over, but I seriously doubt that they will rule with the passions their Dad did!!!

I'm not a baseball fan but I knew who he was through his being mentioned on Seinfeld in 16 episodes. He never appeared on the show personally, but they'd show an actor from the back to represent him.

I saw on the news that he had passed and saw clips of him still watching baseball just this past year....he was good at what he did and someone like that is never popular with former coaches etc.....but he was a good man for the yankees! RIP George!

hiya Opal
i'm familiar with the NY Yankees ever since i grew up in Syracuse. but i wasn't that knowledgeable about the team. my elder brothers and my dad were more into baseball than i was..but i was a hardcore Knicks fan though during the 'Patrick Ewing' years
i asked my dad if he knew George Steinbrener has passed.. and he said he did know about it and kept up with the stories about him. well, from the little that i know, he really has been a big influence on the team and also for many many New Yorkers throughout his NY Yankees career and as you said, he will be missed~
hopefully the new guy in charge would be able to fill up the big shoes that George left behind and keep the team going strong..
