Who is the dumb one in this equation?

My male dog boof is always sitting in the same spot in the kitchen whenever someone is in there & we are always falling over him...hubby & I discussed this a couple of weeks ago...who is more dumb? Boof for sitting in the same spot knowing he will be accidentally kicked because we fall over him or us for falling over him because we "know" he's there? We have come to the conclusion that we are the dumb ones in the situation as humans are smarter than dogs (well most of the time anyway). What's your opinion?

Sounds really cute. A day in the life of Boof! Maybe you could perhaps put a furniture on that spot so Boof would be forced to move to another place safer. Nobody's dumb. Boof loves his space, and you keep forgetting.

Yeah, we do keep forgetting but it's ALWAYS right where you need to stand to prepare something or wash the dishes!

I wish it was as easy as moving the sink

Oh gee, we definitely can't move the sink on this one! How about giving him a napping place specially made for him. Dogs tend to be territorial. They stay where their body scent is. Im not a dog expert but that I learned from Discovery channel. ahaha

I have large dogs. I am a trainer for working dogs. All dogs are trained to stay when people are around them or stay down when going over them. If the dog is doing this on it's own free will, an easy train. If the dog is in a very bad spot ex. In front of the stove, sink etc. It can be taught to move very easily. Your right, the dog is the smartest.. REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV, TRAIN/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THEY WILL ALWAYS LUV U

I would love you to come & train my 2 staffies! About the only thing they try not to do is sit in front of you & watch you while you eat in hope of getting some food - I don't feed them dinner until we have finished dinner so they know where their spot is in the food chain. Boof loves to sit in the corner in front of the cupboards & directly underneath the microwave - this is the main problem coz we always go back & forth to the sink which he sits near....can you please give me some tips to teach/train him not to sit there? He knows not to sit there but still does.

The best way for dogs to stop pestering at dinner, feed them before you eat. After they eat they usually want to go out to do their thing, then they like to nap. With smaller dogs a treat to train is a good method. To get them to change their position where u want them to lay down. Take off your shoes, move right into them untill the spot u want them to lay down is good , call them a good dog, give them a treat. When they get the idea that is a good spot, give them a treat when they r there, then slowly wein them off from treats in that spot.. Dogs are like people, they want to please but want direction..

Human has a short span of memory, that is why you fall over him knowing he is there. Animal has longer span of memory, still your dog sit there for you to fall over. Maybe he thinks you two are playing with him?

I think it's more like he wants to make sure he gets whatever may fall on the floor!

I have to agree with you. Sorry to say this but I would say that you are sort of dumber since the dog doesn't have the same intellectual capacity as a human being such as yourself so you should be the bigger mammal and just try to avoid him instead.

I hope you don't mind, but I have to agree with your conclusion. Either you teach him to sit in a particular place in the kitchen (other than "the hot spot"), or you are carefull to step over Boof. As he has terrier blood, there are small chances he will give up voluntarely his favourite place of supervising the kitchen, no matter how many times you fall over him. What about your staffie girl, does she stay in the way, too?

Josie does get in the way but when we tell the both of them to move, she gets right out of the kitchen...Boof on the other hand will only move about an inch! I'm glad we're not the only one to come to this conclusion

Yeah, girls are allways easyer to convince to do things for you. That's why I decided to have only female dogs. I'm not surprised that you say Boof only moves an inch when he is asked to leave the kitchen. He seems a big eater like my girl, Binne. And he looks as stubborn as she is. That's terrier blood!

You two should be the one to avoid the dog since the dog can't understand most of what we want to tell them except for those really trained dogs. As you have said, you know that he's sitting there, just try to avoid him.

@vhings - Boof has been trained @inu - hey your name is Japanese for dog lol...Boof will do EVERYTHING he can when it comes to food!

lol Don't be so sure! Boof surely knows he might be knocked if he stays it this particular spot of the kitchen. But he doesn't want to loose the opportunity to be in the middle of the action. You know, when it comes to food, dogs will do everything to get it.

No offense but I think you are. You know he's always there so why you keep kicking poor boof
• Australia

I know what you mean but it is an accident when we kick him...normally it's more like step on his poor feet

I got a laugh out of this one. I can't tell you how many times one of our animals has worked us to just where they wanted us to be, over and over agin until it finally dawned on us what was going on. This is what comes from multitasking, you just don't pay enough attention. Been there, done that. Blessings

Yep, we humans are the dumb ones. I have the same problem in our kitchen. We have our dog and two cats all around our feet in the food preparation area at night time. The know what part of the house the food comes from and they do not leave your feet around dinner time! I am always cursing them for being under my feet, but then I know that they are there so perhaps I should be cursing myself instead!

I have to agree, I definitely think it is you guys because that is just funny. My cat does the same thing and non fail I trip over him all the time. Do any of us learn from this mistake, I don't think so as I have been tripping over him for 4 years now.
