Your Ideal Team Member or Team Leader

Please take a moment to describe your ideal team member or team leader. For instance, if you are a team member, share a description of your ideal team leader. If you are a team leader, tell us about a perfect example of a good team member. The reason I ask is because last week I just finished the book THE ONE MINUTE MANAGER. (Here is the link to the book if you are interested in reading a Google preview http://books.google.com/books?id=PKTqpbz4zZAC&dq=one+minute+manager&printsec=frontcover&source=bn&hl=en&ei=PGg-TPDIIernnQfx_ujrBA&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=8&ved=0CEwQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q&f=false.) The book does a great job describing what an ideal manager would be like. I think more managers need to read this book! Has anyone heard of or read this book before? Would you agree that all managers should be required to read it? I'm considering bringing up this book to my team leader sometime and possibly even at my upcoming review. (My review should take place at the end of this month or the beginning of August.) Should I discuss this book at my review and recommend my team leader read it? Do you think it would be more appropriate for me to bring up the book at another time (not at my review)? Why or why not? Your feedback is much appreciated!

I have not read the book. But I wouldn't suggest discussing the book at your review. It can give the impression that you aren't too happy with your team manager and are trying (indirectly) to give tips. It would be better to discuss it at another time. As a team leader, I would think a good team leader is one who would let him/her team do the best of their ability and encourage them to do so. I also feel it depends on where you work at and what the needs of your office/work place are. Motivating a team worker is different at different offices. A corporate setting would need a different type of motivation than a company dealing with physical work. I can discuss this further only after reading the book. I will check if my library has a copy and will try to borrow it.

I never thought about it, but you're exactly right - that a team leader will have certain qualities to be a good boss, depending on the line of work. However, all team leaders should possess core qualities that are the same across the board. Thanks for your response. I hope someday you will have the opportunity to read the book. It is an excellent reference. Take care, my friend!

This is a good discussion since people have different opinions on a good team leader or a good team member, and I think a good team leader is someone who listens to what you have to say and takes any suggestions to improve the team,a good team leader also compliments you when you do a good job,and treats you like a equal, and right now I am working for Kmart and my third shift supervisor is awesome she is all of the things I mentioned and she is the best supervisor I have ever had,and I can see working for her for a long time.

All the things you mentioned would most definitely make an excellent team leader! I'm so glad to know you have this type of leader to work for. Doesn't it make work so much more enjoyable? While I have a very good and professional team leader, I wish she had more of these qualities. She's very negative in that she focuses on what her team members do wrong rather than what they do right (and encourage team members, as you mentioned). I would love my team leader to listen more. I mean, she is a great listener in general, but when I mention good changes and things that I would like to see in regard to our team, she does not take them into consideration or implement them even though she is physically listening to what I say. I just try to look at the glass half full because I still have a great boss, and she is very thoughtful in general - things could definitely be worse, so I'm very thankful for having my job for over three years now. It is wonderful to have that income. Thanks so much for sharing a detailed description of the perfect team leader! I'm so glad you can enjoy working for someone so wonderful! Take care - great to hear from you as always!

I do not think your review is a time for you to be suggesting reading to your leader, although you might remark that you have read it and found it helpful. Your review should focus on what they want to say about you and to you. It is really great for you to be engaging in this personal growth, and that you found a helpful book.

Thanks for your excellent advice. The more I've thought about it, I definitely agree with you that my review shouldn't turn into a book club, although I can mention it in passing that I'm working on my own personal growth, as you said. Perhaps through my mentioning the book, my team leader would become curious to read it herself. Thanks again for your response. I'm going to do as you've said because I could use a great review this year!

A good team member is one who is aware of the weaknesses and merits of the group and acts accordingly. A good team leader is a person who knows the strengths of the members of the group and is excellent in hiding the members of the group's weaknesses. Leadership is best obtained through experience with real people and in multiple contexts. It behooves anyone envisioning himself as a leader to develop projects where all members of the team can shine.

I really like your perspective of team members and team leaders because we all have weaknesses, of course. It's a fact of life. It's all about learning to work despite those weaknesses. I think if we as employees focus on the weaknesses, they will bring us down. That's another big aspect of the book I mentioned. It focuses on the positive rather than the negative and causes employees under its methods to be more productive than they would be otherwise. I agree with you that leadership for the most part must be learned through experience. An ideal situation would be where the team members and team leaders can both help one another to be as efficient as possible. I always looked at it as the employees' responsibility to "make the boss look good," but that's the wrong perspective since the employees don't serve the manager. They work together; however, someone has to be in charge, which is why there have to be leaders! Thanks for your excellent response.

I ran a bookstore here in Jasper from 1984 to 1986 and we sold this book. I never did read it, though. It might be a good idea if all managers read it. I just never did take the time to read it because there were so many books and there were times when we would get really busy. I'm not a team leader any more but I'm a member of the drill team out at EASI. I think a good team leader should be patient with his/her team members. He/she should also be easy to talk to and willing to help any team member who is having any problems. They should discipline but he/she should discipline in a tactful or diplomatic way. It's always been very important to me that the manager, boss, supervisor, teacher, etc. be patient with me. As far as whether or not you should discuss this book with your team leader at your review, I really don't know, to tell you the truth. It might be better if you waitied until another time. The reason why I say this is because, if you are going to be alone with your team leader at your review, she might think you don't think she's a very good team leader, manager, etc. You might could explain to her that you read it and you thought it would be good if all people in authority read it, whether they are good at managing or not. This is just my opinion, though.

Hi there! Thanks for your honest response - I appreciate learning your opinion because I agree with you. I don't think I should discuss the book in too much detail (or suggest it) because I definitely wouldn't want it to seem like I'm attacking her or implying she isn't the best team lead. That wouldn't be fair to her since it would just be her and myself at the meeting. I'm glad you mentioned this because I didn't think of it in that way, but I'm for sure going with what you said. If I do mention the book at the review, I will more mention it in passing that I'm trying to become a better person, not bashing on her leadership skills - LOL! As for your ideal team leader, I couldn't agree with you more. A patient leader is one of the most important things because you will know that he or she will work with you for as long as it takes to train you because he or she will understand the importance of taking the time with the team member to make sure it's an investment in the future, so to speak. I find it very interesting that you ran a bookstore for a little while! How neat - I would get myself in trouble if I did that because my boss might find me with my nose in a book or taking too long of a break to catch up on some reading! The same would be true of working at the library or something like that because with all those books calling to me, I wouldn't know what to do with myself! (LOL) Thanks so much for responding. I really will take your words of advice to heart and as always it's so wonderful to hear from you!

Hi there! Let me first apologize that it has taken so long for me to choose Best Response on this discussion. I could've done so a while ago - my apologies! As for the content of this discussion, I'll go into detail about it in another upcoming discussion, but I never actually had this review with my team leader. This is because I was hired on at another company before the review took place, so I did not have to confront my prior team leader about any of this, for which I'm very grateful! I thought you deserved to know since you had the BR. It's great news that I have finally been able to move on to a new career! I will definitely share more about it soon. Take care!

Thank you for the best response! I'm glad to know that you have a new and hopefully better job now! I think it would be great if you and I could meet sometime! Because you seem to like my suggestions and comments so much, I think we could be good friends! Didn't you tell me that you had relatives in Moulton, Alabama one time? I seem to remember a discussion you started one time about spending some time in Alabama and I asked you what part of Alabama it was. I think you said it was Moulton. I don't live far from Moulton, myself. If you're ever back down this way in the future, please let me know and maybe we can get together! I would like that so much!
