Hi, While you don't have to use plugins, they can make both your life easier and your blog more user and reader friendly etc. A lot may depend on what you want to do with your blog - but there's plugins for all sorts of things. From spam and comment plugins to better seo for your blog, linkbuilding, adding youtube etc etc. Just take a look at the main wp plugins page or do a search for plugins and take a look at what's around. I have half a dozen or so that are must haves for every blog I set up, along with a few that make certain blogs run better or give me added tools depending on the blog etc.

I'm using wp. I signed up for a free hosting in awardspace dot com, my problem with plugins is that they don't let me use it in my free account. that's why I'm asking if I can still optimize my site using wordpress alone with out plugin.

Hi, I'm not sure why they won't allow plugins (free hosts I've used in the past have allowed it) but you can still use and get alot out of wordpress, even without the plugins - make sure you do things like set the permalinks correctly (better for seo if you can have the actual post name in the link etc) make the most of the categories by making sure they are keyword/phrase optimised etc. Build inwards links to your own blog posts by linking from one post to a related post (or building a table of contents etc page) There's heaps you can do - it's just that some of the plugins make it quicker and easier
