...and it's China! Does this freak anyone else out? I mean, with all the right wing and libertarians rallying around the free-market system, is China their pinnacle of this? Kind of a scary thought. If China is the apex of capitalism, I'll take moderate socialism any day.

China does not have a "free market". It is controlled by their government just like everything there is. Yes they have seen a big boom lately because they took advantage of the global ecomony. They offer cheap labor with few rules....as long as you follow the government rules. Companies can make more in profits because the work force is so cheap which also helps them stay competitive in the global market. Want to know why China is doing so goood? Because of consumers. We don't care where our products come from or who made it...as long as it is cheap. If consumers actually cared about how their products were made or by what country you would see China's ecomony drop. What we have here in America is not capitalism. We have not truely practiced it in a long time. What we have is corporatism. That needs to change. that is what is wrong with our system. We can call our system capitalism all you want....most people do because that is what we are founded on...but if you look real close at what we actually pratice you will see we shifted away from that a generation or so back and started into corporatism.

I think the common good needs to come back into play again.

Ummm...and who gets to define "common good"? because your idea, mine and heck everyone else's idea of it might be different. Is it in the "common good" to import cheap items from china so that peoples money goes farther? Or is it in the "common good" to have americans buy more american made products...they cost more...meaning less money to go around...but it creates jobs? Or is it in the "common good" to make the american employee except less pay and benefits so that they are more competitive in the job market with other countries work forces?

Not a surprise. America has confused capitalism as politics and free market as stealing. Many socialist and communist country's are also capitalist and do very well without making it an alter to pray at.
