Noynoy vs PAGASA vs media

Philippines

Yesterday Noynoy scolded PAGASA for their yet another failed forecast about typhoon Basyang. But PAGASA said that signal no. 2 might be raised over the metro manila and there is a high probability that it will pass near metro manila during a press conference tuesday morning. Was it PAGASA's fault or the media's fault? Do you think he did the right thing scolding only PAGASA? Why didnt he even mentioned the media's mistake not reporting it? That's their job. Or is he too afraid of the media?

It's been heard over and over that Pag-asa doesn't have the right equipment. The govt should address this ore else we will never be prepared for huge storms

Agreed. There are private companies who have better equipment than PAGASA.

My mother has been debating with us on the same point. She says that Pag-asa mentioned that it might pass by Metro Manila. I think PNoy was irked because Pag-asa reported the shift in the typhoon's path late and so the disaster teams in the right places were not prepared. Japan's forecast was more accurate. I think Pag-asa acknowledged that it was their mistake because they never corrected the President or the media.

They knew but broadcasted too late. So still their fault. Maybe they are waiting for the media to call them. While the media is waiting for their call. hehehe.

This funny that PAGASA now is in the ire of Pnoy, well I guess it is really hard to predict the outcome of a typhoon because for one our equipments are ill equipped, secondly, this weather bureau is perhaps the most neglected government agency that are given priority by many administrations. So who's fault is it now? We can blame the Typhoon for maybe not asking permission to avoid Metro Manila when she is about to come in.

lol. yes let's blame it on the rain! hehe. but seriously, Pagasa said they told the press about a possibility of signal number on metro manila during a press con tuesday morning. but after that they didn't tell it again and the media forgot about it. that's why Senator Zubiri 'refiled' a bill that pagasa AND the media networks should have an hourly updates on storms.

For me it is just right that Noynoy will call the attention of PAGASA for this because it is not a joke for a country to be hit by a storm. The concerned agency must do their job. In this case, the PAGASA is expected to give their best.

sometimes having a leader in a democratic country is not easy, but in my former country, no one can speak against kim jong il. am sure they did their best to find solution into this.

PAGASA does not have the proper technology like other countries use in forecasting the weather. If the government wants to rely to PAGASA, they should provide them with sufficient funds. The previous president didn't support PAGASA that is why their forecasts are not accurate.

it is a big risk, i think if there will be issues like this one if you have the lack in technology in forecasting.

Well, I don't know about you guys but I've heard the warnings by media on the radio. I guess nobody is to blame here. Pnoy should just keep cool and not point fingers when there is really no one to blame here.

There is no use pointing fingers now. We all know that our PAGASA is really not capable of accurate weather forecasting. Given that certain fact Noynoy should have known that they are unreliable so they should have been smart enough to use the information given or offered by other countries like Japan. Even if we put millions of funds in PAGASA now we would still suffer the same fate. I hope they learn to use free outside information until our national weather agency is equipped and ready. We all know where the problem lies so there shouldn't have been any blaming event after that.

This has always been the way with PAGASA. they do seldom predict accurately about a storm, whereas nobody can really predict the outcome of a typhoon (Except GOD) well as for the reporters, they should limit themselves to just reporting and no interpretation and conclusion..i think this is what happened. I guess it is now really up to the Pnoy to mention as he is holding back any negative feed backs from the media. It it better to work with the media people that pull string against them, we all know how powerful media can get. Good Luck Mr. President and see you when a new storms develop ( but i hope there will be no more typhoons) Goos Evening Damned_dle

The media has all the right to post whatever pag.asa says to alert the citizens about incoming typhoons. Well storms and typhoons are pretty hard to read and predict. Noynoy is just concerned about the people's welfare. He is talking on behalf of us.

well, they all have their faults. but the main thing to blame is our weather equipments--thay made PAG-ASA forecast late, which made the media report it even later, and in turn made pres. noynoy angry. argh. why are we stuck with handovers anyway?!

I think its better if we focus on seeking how to solve this problem of inefficiency and inaccurate weather reporting because a lot of lives were lost because of this. The latest news said the AGHAM partylist will donate millions in pesos to modernize and computerize PAGASA equipments, including their means of communications. Kudos to them! This is just the beginning. I hope there wont be another catastrophy in the making like Ondoy, but the country should be ready for the worst.
