Quantity or Quality of Sleep?

Most people believe that we need around 8 hours of sleep a day. But on other countries like Japan, they only sleep 5 hours max! Doing a little research on this I found out that quality of sleep is better than quantity. So you can sleep for 5 hours and will have more energy if you know how you can achieve quality sleeping. Now that's 3 more extra hours to do things! What do you think?

I think that quality of sleep is very important. Some who sleep 8 hours are even pretty tired and slow and they feel that they are so tired. I also tried this and it is very tiring to sleep more than what you should have. Having a good sleep doesn't need hours on it.

I think the best time to wake up is when we feel like waking up. Not by an alarm clock or over sleeping when we don't really need to.

My teacher way back in college taught us how to get some sleep in 15 minutes that is equivalent for 3 hours of sleep. With a soothing background music, I remembered that she let us close our eyes and think about the colors of the rainbow one by one starting with the color red to blue. You think about one color for a while and then proceed to the next slowly. After reaching the last color, you reverse the process. You start again with the blue until you reach the red. Then you wake up feeling refreshed. It really works! You can do away with the background practice and you can do it by yourself. But it takes a lot of practice in concentrating though. So I guess the quality of sleep is good enough. :D

I think that's meditation. I like doing that too once in awhile. But it will only boost your energy for a short time. We still need real sleep.

Quality, even a 10 hours of interrupted sleep cannot match my 4 hours of continuous sleep (no waking up due to noise disturbances, even a aching full bladder to empty). So I make sure that I am sleepy before going to bed and will not tire my mind trying to sleep.

I think that the quality of the sleep is better than the quantity. Some may sleep longer but uncomfortably but If you have a good sleep even for a shorter time, you may have a better mood.

Nice topic, QUANTITY vs QUALITY..haha For most people, how restful they feel after a night's sleep defines how they demeanor will be for that day. Every person's sleep patterns differ, so one person might need eight to ten hours of continuous sleep to feel rested while another person might only need about six hours. Quality of sleep is what really counts in the game of life. You might say that you get eight to ten hours of sleep, but that quantity does not account for much if the quality of that sleep was not good. We all need sleep in order to function. It's a necessity of life, like breathing and eating. When we feel rested, thanks to a good night's sleep, we probably feel like we could tackle anything that came to us. But if our night was interrupted by outside factors resulting in a restless sleep, chances are that we might feel irritable and not quite focused the next day.

It also depends on the person. Some people who sleep 6 hours in enough, while some require 8-10. Actually when I sleep, I hate exceeding the number of hours I need because I'm a very busy guy and I like to spend most of my time on productive things. I really hate it when I sleep too much because so much time is wasted.

I only sleep a maximum of 5 hours a night but I don't think I get any quality sleep. How do you get those anyway? I think the longer you sleep, the deeper REM sleep you get, therefore the more quality sleep you go through. That's why it is prescribed to get 8 hours so that a portion of it you might get to deep REM sleep. But don't take my word for it, I'm no expert.

Our sleep has stages, 1,2,3,4,5 which cycles through the night 4-5x. stage 3-4 deep sleep stage. stage 5 is REM sleep when we dream. We need melatonin to increase our deep sleep. We can get it through sunlight. Exercise and proper diet helps too. And a lot more factor to consider. Like the time you sleep, the time you wake. Your alarm clock should ring when you are at the stage 1-2 of sleep. So trial and error is needed.

Quality of sleep is more important than quantity of sleep. One must complete 8 hours of straight sleep before one can say that she/ he slept well.Quantity does not mean quality and when you wake up 3-4 times in a day, one cannot still say that she or he was able to feel refreshed after waking up.

sometimes quality.because sometimes when u get into deep sleep even a 15 mins of sleep would feel as if you slept for 2 hours.and sometimes when u sleep for even 8 hours it feels as if u didnt sleep at all.(like my last night).

Its ok to sleep for 5 hours but you definately need the quality sleep. I have heard people say they they sleep for 3 hous and its enough. They are lying bcos the body needs enough sllep. If the sllep debt piles up than the body will not respond properly.

I don't think 3 hours is enough too! If they sleep 3 hours everyday then they will definitely get tired and sick.

I have to sleep for 8 hours a day, not half an hour less or I get cranky. I do rather the quantity.

I only sleep about 4-5 hours a day but it's already enough for me to be pumped up and to start a new day full of energy. But of course, 8 hours of sleep is good to body...:D

I dont know exactly. Im doing night shift :(. But i feel to sleep nicely in rainy days. I think whatever i sleep more in daytime, its not equal to the night sleep. Quantity or quality, sleep at right time. Its good for health. My mom used to tell me to avoid sleep in daytime as it'll make us fat. Anyway i suggest you friends to sleep at right time and offcourse atleast 6 hrs deep sleep. If we sleep good, we can be active whole day. Sleep will make us energetic too. :)

Well that is right.. the quality of the sleep is also required... 8 hours of sleep without the quality does not rest your body and mind...

I Feel that Quality Sleep is better than sleeping more. For instance, When you're really tired and you take a short thirty minute nap, You feel well-rested when you wake up becasue the quality of the sleep was excellent, But ont the other hand - You could sleep for eight or ten hours and wake up still feeling tired and unrested. When your uncomfortable, You'll move around in your sleep and will make the Quality of your sleep less.

When one goes to bed when sleeps obio that depends mas on the calidad that of the quantity of hours of dream. The people who suffers from insomnia, the sleepwalkers, that you have to raise at every hour to go to the bath, are persons who thereabouts happen many hours in the bed and cannot have a good quality of dream. But also it is true that the doctors recommend 8 hours to rest well, because not with mas not with less time you are going to obtain better results.

I dont know. I sleep and sleep as long my body ask me to sleep. Maybe you are right, sometimes I sleep for 4 hours only and my body is doing OK, sometimes I sleep more than 8 hours. Well all I know is, 8 hours of sleeping is recommended for kids, and for adult we don't need to complete the 8 hours sleeping. Just like I said I just my follow my body.

Well for me the quality and the time of sleep matters. I feel better and refreshed when my sleeping was from 9:00PM - 6:00AM rather than the 12:00MN - 9:00 AM sleep. I don't know where I heard or read this but I remembered that body regeneration starts at 9:00 PM in the evening when you sleep.

I think we need both quantity and quality. You cannot have a good sleep if you compromise one of both. For me, they complement each other. 7 hours of sleep is enough for me but if it is too noisy or anything that wakes me up in between 7 hours is not sufficient. I need 8 to 9 hours to be fully charged plus coffee at breakfast. So be sure to be keep yourself comfortable when you sleep.
