Did you know that about 100 years ago, a group of specialists have tried to create a simple language which had to be the worldwide language. However, today it's spoken by 2 millions people... I don't remember the name of this language, but the important is, that there has had an attempt at creating such a global language which everyone would speak. To come back on the topic, I think that if every of the most powerful countries on the Planet, had the same chance as UK and then the USA in the past, their national language would become an international language. On the other hand, not every language of the most powerful countries is easy for learning. Actually, I can't imagine the world speaking for example Russian or French. Do you imagine all the people making "rrrrrrrrrrr" :D

I don't think English is an international language. I think we only think it is because we speak it. Same as Chinese. Just because it has the biggest population, it doesn't make it an international language. If countries were tallied and counted for the language they speak, I think French would turn up as having the most counts. Making it a real international language. That's why most international organizations have French as the official language.
I could be mistaken though...

Could have been German and Japanese if they hadn't lose world war 2. Imagine the marriage of these two languages as the lingua franca.

I think it would be chinese. I guess there are many people who spoke well in chinese language and we all know that china is one of the most populated countries in the world.

During the medeival times, Latin was the most popular language because of the Roman Empire and probably the Spanish Empire after, second was the English language. all changed when US defeated former British Empire and then USA winning most of the conflicts in World War II. it made English the most popular language in the World because of the Western Superpowers such as United States.

by a long way spanish rules. it has been around for hundreds of years prior today and widely spoken by citizens of either mexico or the philippines. i would say latin can compete but it is way older to be considered an international language me thinks.
