My 4 year old Rottweiler eats his poo.

So, I have noticed this about my Rottweiler since he was a young pup. Even though I give him all the food he needs (he doesn't even finish his food sometimes). He still does it. I can't always be there to clean it up for him before he eats it since I am sometimes away for work. Any of you guys have the same experience?

I have mentioned in another post. There is a reason why dogs will eat their own poo and it has to do with their digestive system. The digestive system of the dog will not process all the food before it is pass out as poo. As a result, traces of food can still be found in the poo. As the dog nose is more sensitive, they are able to smell the food and thinking that it is edible, they will proceed and eat it, even thou you might have given him enough food.

I suppose you have a point there. I also have heard this once from a friend but I was speculating at that time so I disregarded his response. But now that I also see that someone has this point of view regarding this topic, the idea is reinforced in my mind. Thanks for this response.

I had a problem like that with my dogs once. A particular dog of mine eats his poo before. We don't know why he does this. We feed him regularly and aptly. We provide him water and let him in the house. But whenever he will poo, he'll eat it. What we did was we watch him after he ate and wait for him to poo. When he did, we held him while cleaning his poo. We did this for a couple of days and we rid him of his unpleasant habit. I know it was tedious, but hey, it worked. =)

I also tried something like this a few years back (when my dog was about 2 years old). But it only worked for a couple of months and after a while he just returned to doing it.

I have heard that if you push the dogs nose... wait nevermind that's if they poop in the house... Hmm I would just try to get someone to take him out when your not home, and clean up any poo that's in the house? Not sure if anyone would do that though and most definitely not for free.

I know it is a very unpleasant habbit the one your dog has. But they say it can be changed.
First you have to find out what is the reason for what he does.
It may be a medical problem or only a behaviour problem.
First pay a visit to the vet, to perform an examination. If the vet says you dog's problem is not a medical problem, then you should try a method (or combine a few) until you break your dog's habbit.
Be sure you adequate exercise him not only physically, but also mentally, as such a habbit could be a symptom of anxiety, stress or boredom.
Teach him the command "leave it!".
Try feeding twice a day. If you feed him only once a day, he may become very hungry and scavenge around for any food, including poo.
You may use a choke collar, and every time he tries to eat poop, give a short tug on the leash.
No matter what method you decide to use, remember you have to be consistent in order to stop your dog eating his own poop.

I used to have dogs and believe me, they eat their poop more often than I thought they would. You can try to train him not to eat his own poop by punishing him whenever he does it. I don't mean to hit him but to yell at him, ignore him, or to put him on a leash. It's a lot easier to train when they are young but you can always do it now with a bit more difficulty as a habit is hard to break.

I have tried to train my dog when he was little and it worked for some time. But after a few months he started doing it again. I wish I had more time to train him again but I am sort of busy right now.
