My usual routine in taking vitamin C is either after breakfast or after lunch. My daily dose is 500 mg. I am also a coffee drinker and I drink coffee at any time of the day. I've been advised though not to drink coffee just before or right after I'm taking vitamin C. And, vitamin C should also be taken at least one hour after the meal. Since I'm always busy, every time I try to follow the "1-hour" rule, I often forget to take vitamin C then because I'm always busy at hours in between meals. These are the questions that have been bothering my mind:
Is is true that we should not drink coffee just before or after our vitamin C intake?
What is it with coffee that will affect the supposedly benefits from taking vitamin C?
How does drinking vitamin C right after the meal become less beneficial if not beneficial at all?
I hope these questions can be addressed so as to stop living in hear-says and fictions.

Coffee is a stimulant and we there's a relation between the action of stimulants and gastric acidification. If you couple it with taking weak acids such as Ascorbic acid (also known as Vitamin C), it might synergize the acidification and will give you some stomach discomfort. That maybe one of the reasons why we are refrained not to take coffee before taking in Vitamin C.

Oh.. So that's the reason behind it. What do stimulants contain anyway that could react with acids?

First, was it your doctor who advised that you should not drink coffee before or after taking vitamin C and take it an hour after meals? If yes, then maybe you should follow him/her. Second, I'm a former food technology student and from what I know, there really isn't anything wrong with drinking coffee before or after taking Vitamin C. Actually, vitamin C is used to breakdown antioxidants for your body to absorb them better. That's why when you're taking up Vitamin E, it is necessary to to take Vitamin C as well because it breaks down Vitamin E for your body to utilize it. And coffee contains antioxidants right? It works the same as vitamin E. =)
