I get upset when you read the jacket of the book and it sounds interesting enough t read, then you can barely get through the first 50 pages. I have a habit of telling myself that I have to finish it even it stinks. I need to learn that there are thousands of books out there that I would love instead

yeah that happened to me too.
i couldn't relate very much to it but i felt like i had to read it 'til the end. luckily, i bought that book for a very cheap price because it was 2nd hand (or probably nth hand:-))
so that's a rule i sort of stick to up to now; never buy them new. there are lots of shops in my university that sell used books. sometimes i just borrow from friends, especially those newly released books. this way i get to enjoy a book while saving some money.
last week i bought an old copy of 1984 by George Orwell. it's good, and cheap(^_^)

There have been times when I forced myself to finish a book that I didnt think was good. I normally have finished the books but there are a few that I just couldnt bring myself to finish. I donated those ones to used book stores or local goodwill.

Reading a bad book can be obvious only after getting through the introduction or even on the first page. A bad book is an incredibly dull experience for those who enjoy reading quality books.

I always read everything I start all the way to the finish. Even books I feel are boring or that I start to hate. There are multiple reasons why I do this. First of all... just because I'm having trouble in the beginning doesn't mean I'm going to hate the book in the end. Second, how do I know what a good book really is if I haven't read any bad books? Third, and along the same lines as number 2, I appreciate the books I love so much more when I actually spend time reading books I hate. Finally, because finishing a book that I'm not into helps me to read with better comprehension even when I'm bored out of my mind. How is this helpful? Well... I go to college, and I am required to read textbooks and study. lol
Most of the time I usually pick books that I enjoy, or at least books that I think are okay. If I hate a book... no harm done. It's not time wasted in my opinion.
