Stupid AOL

I don't know about this stupid AOL. I have gotten two "undeliverable" messages from people's e-mail addresses that were perfectly good e-mail addresses. Both times it happened after we had a few conversations about AOL reading your e-mail and causing trouble when they don't like what they see.
I had posted last week about my mail being temporarily unavailable. And it's happening a lot more often lately.
Time to switch to Yahoo, Hotmail or Gmail?
Darn it, everybody has had that AOL address for years and years and years, I have things saved there, I have all my contacts, I hate change, I like to whine....
Couple of people on here have come by and said things about AOL that weren't very complimentary.
So, should I pull up stakes and take my business elsewhere?

Hey, D!
I've been having all sorts of computer problems lately, and one of the worst is that AOL seems to want to deliver only the mail they like. I've switched several people to a hotmail account, but I think I'll keep the AOL one because, like you, so many people have had it for so many years!

If only they cared, we wouldn't be having these problems!

I still use my AOL account, but I no longer pay for it.
I have had a few issues like you describe as well.
I also have e-mail addresses at Yahoo and G-mail, plus all the assorted e-mail addresses that come with my web pages.
AOL is my main e-mail that I have had the longest so I have had a hard time trying to part with it, but if for some reason I can't send an e-mail through AOL, I can always use one of my other accounts.

I can use any of my other accounts to send mail too, but if I can't get to AOL, I can't:
1. read incoming mail
2. get at my address book
Annoying...

I get a lot of spam on gmail, but it always seems to go into the right folder.

Yes, very annoying.
The address book thing is one of the reasons I have not dumped my AOL account, that and the 10 years of saved mail, that I probably don't need, but it is nice to have it saved there anyway.
Most of my incoming mail now goes through an e-mail address attached to one of my web sites and then forwards to my aol account, so if for some reason I can not get into AOL to read these mails, I can always see these messages in my web office (it is just not as convenient). Over the last couple years I have been changing the e-mail address on my business cards and marketing material to a G-Mail address. I seem to get a LOT less spam at G-mail than I do at AOL and Yahoo.

I think I'll use the AOL account for all my spam and use Yahoo for personal mail.

I do use Gmail, but for now I"m going to send people the Yahoo address. I get notified when I have mail because I use Yahoo Messenger.

Why not use gmail? its a great service... I have been using it for quiet some time. You can add pop forwarding to your aol account or vice versa. It would save you from changing emails from all the other services u might have registered with.

I gave a long response but it went to computer heaven. My boss ordered me to change internet service and for 5 days I have not been able to send an email at work.Spent countless hours talking to tech support and doing everything that they asked for but it does not work. Am so cross as if something works then why change it?
I too hate change but perhaps it would be best for you to have another account.

I sent you an e-mail from my yahoo account a while back. I think I'm going to slowly transition people over there for now, clean up the AOL and then see what I want to do... Maybe I"ll leave the spam there. :D

change it up to Gmail dear... not promoting the 'G' guys or anything, but get it done this one time and switch your email to it, and a lot more internet stuff can be so much more better

I know a fair number of people who have had their Yahoo or Hotmail accts hacked, but I figure if I keep my personal stuff on Yahoo and all my other crap on AOL, maybe that won't be an issue.

this is 3 mths old discussion but I am wondering about AOL and AIM
I have a friend I used to send and receive emails with but out of the sudden I received spams from her
I don't believe she sends it, but then again I can't contact her at all
she can send me emails but any email I sent her bounced
does this sound familiar to you ? how do you fix it?
I read the webmaster email also bounced, so I guess I won't be able to contact her at all

my ex used to monitor for them.and oh yea,he was reading people's stuff.
i can't say they encouraged it,but none the less he was.
if you have the full version and leave,i would recommend you wipe your HD and reinstall your stuff.even when you cancel it there's a buttload of stuff that remains in your system eating up space.

dawnald,
Change if you like and I highly recommend Gmail for it's extensiveness in their apps and security enhancements.
However, you may want to keep your AOL account for a while and mail forward whatever is coming in to your new email account and address. In this way, you will be sure of a thorough switch over which could include people who had your previous address but not sent you an email till after you have decided to switch.
Have a nice day.

dawnald,
It is really your call here as I am just stating my experience with Gmail where their SPAM control is found to be impressive compared to Hotmail and Yahoo.

AO-Hell!!
Yeah, I used to have that forever ago.. it was my original internet provider, until hubby got me hooked on Road Runner.. but I still kept AOL for certain things.. including the messenger.
Then he and I both learned that AOL is actually spyware in and of itself, and it slowly destroys your computer. My foster mom had nothing but AOL on her puter and after awhile it totally froze her up and her comp worked like crap.. hubby (who is as darn near a computer geek as you can get without taking classes for it) could not figure out how to fix it.. couldn't restore it, couldn't remove anything from it, not even simple pictures... the whole thing was fried. She had to replace her computer and it wasn't even that old... hubby called up his other computer geek friend, who did actually go to school to become a computer geek and after a few questions to see if it was a virus, he asked what provider she used, we said AOL.. he said "Well, that's your problem".
After I discovered that I came home and tried to delete every AOL file on my computer, and guess what? It wouldn't let me.. I couldn't delete a single one of them. We restored my computer but the AOL crud was still on there somehow.. just no longer showing up in the files.. but it was still somehow embedded deep into the motherboard so my computer never worked right again. I replaced it.. but it was getting old anyways, and since then I've never put any AOL anything on my computer.. and never had a problem since.

far as I know, I don't have their software installed on any of my machines, I use their webmail version, but just recently it's started to give me all kinds of hell...

Yeah.. I don't trust them for nothing anymore.. I was even reluctant to add my AIM name to my Trillian when I installed it.. even though it's not AOL software.

Well, when my family changed over from having a dial up modem to cable modem, that was the point that I pulled up the stakes and quit using my AOL account. Yes, it was difficult initially to transfer all of my contacts into my new email address, but in the long run I think it is much better because I feel like my email service is much more dependable. I seldom have messages that aren't able to be delivered, and I feel like they transfer a lot quicker as well.

I haven't really had issues with mail not being delivered until recently, but I have been running into a lot of "mailbox unavailable" type stuff lately.

I have to go and clean up all my saved mail, decide what I want to keep and where I want to keep it. I have to get my address book, at least the addresses I want to keep, and there are a LOT of them. And I have to notify people. That's how hard. :D

Hi dawny! There definitely is something going on with AOL
mail! All of a sudden AOL isn't "allowing" people to get
their mail. It gives out a message saying "that the mail is
unavailable at this time"! WTF? I have 51 emails that I can't
get to? And it isn't just me and it is happening for a few
weeks now and it is happening more frequently an is very annoying!
But, I have had more issues with Yahoo mail than I have ever
had with AOL mail so wouldn't recommend that particular switch!
Yahoo mail is even more full of errors and not being able
to access mail more ofter than AOL and I have all my mylot mail
going to Yahoo so I spend alot of time "waiting for access"!
Choose at your own risk!

I have a Gmail account and I have no complaints. My personal email for friends and family is in Outlook and my ‘other’ emails come through my Gmail. I have never used AOL. It is tough to change email addresses, it’s a bit like changing your phone number, a hassle but it may be worth it if you’re having a lot of problems.

I would definatly reccomend GMail, used them for many years! Simple interface with little clogging up the space on your screen, and there is plenty of space for you to store things. Right now I have 7478MB but it's constantly going up!
I've never heard that AOL read peoples emails, but I've never really liked AOL. Surely this is illegal?
Lee.

My very first email was a Hotmail. I've never had problems with it. Gmail is also good, but lately I've heard some similar issues with what you're going through.
Yep! I believe you should take your business elsewhere. Although I don't envy your task ahead of moving your earning links to whatever service you would eventually choose. Goodluck!

I think I will keep that stuff with AOL and only move the personal stuff. That's the stuff that frustrates me when I can't get to it.

Change is not always necessarily a good thing, but sometimes we have to adapt to changes no matter what. I would say since it is getting worse and worse I would go ahead and change and by the way when you do yahoo and or other ISP providers allow you to drive your contacts over with you.
Or what you can do is start an a free email account with on of the providers, slowly get everyone over to your new email address then be rid of AOL.
That's probably what I would do, since the free one will be with you for ever and by the way if you go with the paid for instance yahoo, you know you can keep the free in the same account..
Hope this helps.

Yep I moved my contacts (the ones I care to keep) over to Yahoo. We'll see how it goes.
