Late night talk shows have been around for years. Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Conan O'brien were shining examples of the late night talk show host. Do you enjoy watching the late night talk shows that are being offered today? Who is your favorite late night talk show host and why?

Boy do you remember **** Cavett (mylot won't let me use his first name), Joey Bishop, Bill Dana? I think my favorite old late night host would be Steve Allen, although he was really before my time. I've seen clips of his show and he 'discovered' or hired many commedians who later became famous in their own right. (Tom Poston, Bill Dana aka Jose Jimennez, Louis Nye, Pat Harrington.) Steve Allen was literally a genious and creat the late night genre. He also wrote numerous songs and several novels. While I did not see much of the original show, I did see a later show that was syndicated. Of the current late night people, I like Letterman, although I never watched him until I went to Japan one time and he was on the only English language channel. My current favorite though is Craig Ferguson who comes on after Letterman. He is somewhat out of control and probably too wild for the the earlier late night crowd.

He also played the piano and on one show he would bring 3 people up from the audience and ask each to play one note on the piano. He would then use the notes to make up a song, even when the notes did not seem related. I heard at one time he was supposed to be in the Guiness book of Records for having written the most songs.

Thank you for contributing burrito88. I can remember seeing a lot of these older comedians as a child on the late night talk shows. Steve Allen would have his wife with a lot of times. They were quite entertaining.

hi sender I am not too fond of late night talk shows really. David Letterman was interesting at times but I prefer my computer late at night myself. And any way I am in a retirement center where people usually go to bed around then and I think they shut the televisions off around 11 p;m.Even in my own apartment we never watched the late night shows much. My son might tune in to David Letterman occasionally.

Thank you for your response here Hatley. David Letterman did have his moments in the talk show world. Even though it may not be your cups of tea, it just might be your son's. It makes life interesting that way.

Hi sender~ I don't watch the usual Late Night shows anymore. I used to watch Johnny Carson since I was a kid (when my mom let me stay up)! I was never a big fan of Letterman, but would watch him once in awhile. I liked Conan and thought he got a really raw deal with Leno, who I will never watch! I watch "Chelsea Lately" (Chelsea Handler) on the "E" Entertainment channel every night! She's my favorite and sometimes watch Craig Fergusson on Channel 2 at midnight, because he's cute and has a Scottish accent!

I like those shows but I rarely got to see them. One of my fave is the colbert report. And the daily show. Wait, is it a late night show? Well it is (was) shown here (Philippines) during late at night. Anyway, those shows are hilarious.

Thanks for sharing here. Shows like the colbert report did give us plenty of humor. Just think if it had been a late night show.

I have never been one to care for the late night talk shows. From what I have seen over the years, I feel that they are not as entertaining as they used to be. Normally, as I lay in my bed at night, with either my laptop or a good book, I have the television turned on, but pay little to no attention to it, and I normally have on shows such as "Forensic Files".

Well, I am in the UK. Over here, one of the most popular late night talk shows is Jonathan Ross. His series has just finished but for many years it was on BBC 1 on Fridays around 10:30pm. The last one he did had David Beckham, Mickey Rourke and Jackie Chan as his guests.
