What is Ugly?

I think in our world we put so much intereste in beauty. but beauty is relative...

It is said that beaut lies in the eyes of the beholder, similarly ugliness lies in the eyes of the beholder. A person born with an ugly visage but having a heart of gold is much more beautiful than one with a beautiful face but having a heart full of evil.You ask, can anything be beautiful.Haven`t you seen the smile of an innocent babe, or a glorious sunrise and sunset/Haven`t youu seen the beauty of a starry night or the beauty of a flower, a snow covered mountain, a tree full of flowers, the face of your mother? There is beauty everywhere in this world, all we have to do is develop the insight to see it. A morose man with negative thoughts will always see the ugly side of life no matter how many times you try to draw his attention to its beauty.Where there is love there is beauty and where there is hate there is ugliness. Today`s world is filled with the ugliness of hate, strife and blood shed of innocent lives. We must do all we can to conver this hate into love only then will life be truly beautiful.

Indeed beauty is relative and difficult to set a standard. Beauty need not be physical but something that emanates from within the soul. Perhaps a standard can be set when a person is not nice within and without.

No there's no standard to beauty. Beauty depends on how people perceive beauty based on their culture. Quoting my art professor, "there's no such thing as beauty, there's only aesthetics" lol. Our topic then is zen aesthetics.
