Income tax and Senior citizens

Hello friends, here in India we have to pay our income tax on or before March 31st of every year. One has to file income tax returnn by 31st July. The financial year is from April 1st to March 31st.
Senior citizens are given some relaxation. Here in my country India, a person of age 60 and above is treated as senior citizen, by government owned as well as private banks, post offices and they give some privileges.
Similarly in income tax there are certain relaxations. But I regret to tell you all that the age to avail this as per income tax department is NOT 60 but 65.
It is really weird, same country, income tax department, railways, most banks are government controlled, but why this discrimination just to suck the senior citizens.
What about your country, which period is treated as financial year? When to file tax returns? At what age a person is treated as senior citizen?
Do senior citizens granted benefits in bank interest rates, concession in travel by train and buses as we enjoy here?
Please reply and comment. Thanks in advance.

I too always thought on these lines. When banks, railways etc. consider 60 years to call a person as senior citizen to avail benefits of a senior citizen, why Income Tax Department should fix 65 years to avail senior citizen benefits? In the early days, it was 55 years as retirement age. My father retired at that age. Then it was made 60. Then why this difference in policy in the same country among different Government Institutions? I hope Income Tax Department will think on this issue and pass orders soon for 60 years to be the age level for senior citizenship.

I am not quite following your arguments. Do you mean that the age for the 2 should be synchronized to 65 meaning only people aged above 65 should be considered senior citizen and be given the extra privileges that people are already enjoying now at age 60?

Hi faisai, I think that for Income Tax purposes also, age should be brought down. My argument is - most people retire by 58, or 60. That is the standard retirement age in our country. So when they pay taxes after retirement, the income is actually from their retirement savings. Initially, the tax would seem higher, as exempt income level increases with each year. Last year it was 225000 this year is ti 245000. But the retired person ends up paying higher taxes in the initial years, which amount was actually necessary to be ploughed back for increasing savings to combat inflation. This impact of first five or seven years hurts their purses rather badly, losing them respect among their family members. In a country that has no social security system, and no plans or laws to save elderly from being harassed by their kids, this is very sad! Effectively, the person is forced to save more for retirement. Not everybody is in government jobs, forcing them to do work past retirement age in private jobs - at a lesser pay than youngsters, effectively depriving youngsters of an opportunity to be employed and creating resentment of sorts. If on the other hand, people who retire do not have to pay any taxes on income from their retirement savings if they not employed, then they would be safe for the rest of their lives. And youngsters would find employment as well. That is why the definition of senior citizen should be uniform in all departments. Age 60 would be fine, except in cases of people opting for voluntary retirement.

I am sorry but I still don't quite follow the arguments. Why the retirement age should be 60 instead of 65 so that the tax is cover by income rather than savings? Older people being asked to work pass their "retirement age" for less pay is exactly because the "official" "retirement age" is at 60 which I don't quite see why it has to be that way.
If it has to be unified, I couldn't help asking, why can't we make it 65.

Hello Professor,
In Australia, the pension starts at sixty-five, but citizens can get a seniors card that provides travel, and other benefits. I went on the pension at sixty-eight as I was teaching in Thailand. I have to receive the pension here for two years before the government will pay my in Thailand. I am returning in five months, which is great. Kime.

hi professor Hatley here from the US I think social security here starts at 65 but they are talking of making it 70 which I feel its outrageous.
Those of us with small social security incomes are not taxed at all. and at age 70 if we want to work full or part time it will not diminish the amount of Social security payments we get monthly. also seniors are given special rates on bus, train, travel. we also get free bank accounts too. i have not seen any concessions by my bank other than a free account, used to get free checks too but not any more. Here income taxes are supposed to be filed before April 15.but us seniors with small social security checks pay no taxes. I wish we seniors would get concessions on b ank interest rates but have not seen any and I am now 84.

I don't know what the guideline for taxing social security is. I do know that they do not deduct taxes, but when I do our taxes we are taxed. My husband is 76, I am on disability. It throws us into owing every year.
The defining guideline could be that we have retirement income, although taxes are deducted. I'm not sure how IRS regulations affect us. I use an electronic filing program.
Prosperous mylotting

Here in China, financial budget is in calendar year system, starts at Jun 1st and end at Dec, 31st.
I'm young so I don't know much about preference toward seniors. What I know is retiring age is 60 for males and 55 for females. The national finance will pay for these seniors' salaries. Elders up to 70 have concessions when taking public transit. They can take free bus or train using their certificates of old.

Hi Professor, here in my place, people whose age are above fifty five are in the category of senior citizens. Senior citizens having the chances to enjoy certain services, like 50 percent or so of discount is given when riding on public transport like train, plane or watching movies on cinema during low or shoulder season. If the personal yearly income of a person has reached the required minimum amount of income tax set then the person has to accomplish the form required before the 30th of April yearly no matter how old he is. For business company the completed form has to be submitted before 31th of May.
These few recent years, there are computers as well as printers are available in the income tax department here for the convenience of the public to deal with the declaration of income tax online. I always complete and submit mine using the device providing there. If anyone come across any problem there are staffs standing by there to give a hand at anytime
Have a nice day
