I used to own a female German Shepherd and she knew a good fifteen commands or so. I was told that its because German Shepherds are intelligent. Does it depend on the breed of dog?

I think it can learn a lot of tricks but sad to say that we have two dogs at home but they dont know any tricks. We also have 2 more dogs in my hometown and the only thing it knows how to do is to bark at strangers which is something very common for dogs to do. I guess our dogs are not smart.

The number of commands a dog can learn depends on the sensitivity of thier hearing. Your dog does not process the word only the tone of the command being given. Silent command or hand signals can be taught to any dog and are often much easier for multi person training, since the tones are different in each person's voice it does not confuse the dog.

I think it depends mostly on the time you spend with your dog. It is well known that German Sheperds are easy to train and intelligent, but, in my oppinion, any dog can be tought as many commands as his master wants.
It doesn't matter what breed is the dog, a mixed-breed or a mongrel should do fine, too.
Yet, there are some breeds known as slow and stubborn, but there are individuals of theese breeds who learnt a lot of commands, too.
