My hair is like 15inch long a bit straight and wavy when I decided to undergo dread locking. It was 6months ago and the process being used are Back Combing technique and crocheting Method. Back combing is a technique wherein you will comb your hair towards your scalp building a tangled hair and will be crochet afterwards. It made 32 strands of dreadlocked hair and that is about 8-10inch long.
It's well maintained and I'm not having any problem on it as of the moment. It's been 6months since I got theses dreads and I'm so happy about my journey of freely expressing myself.
- Have you ever seen a dreadlock guy/women? What's your first Impression seeing them?
- If you're given a chance to dread your hair, would you take the chance?

ewww. How can one " maintain" it by not " maintaining" it? I had a classmate before who I always avoid because he smells or maybe his head smells! And even from afar he already looked smelly. I always give us proper space between us so that I wont smell him. lol!!!

Thats sounds nasty. Maybe that guy really wants to neglect his locks. Well "Neglect" is a method wherein you will just let your dreads locks in a natural way without washing it for a period of time or without using any kind of shampoo and comb.
You can just ask him "hey dude, hows you're locks?" then give some piece of advice. If he really don't want to wash it he may use any clot to cover it , something like tam, headbands or some cool head gear. Sometimes being straight forward is good.

Those are the people who's trying to neglect their Dreads to fully achieved well dreaded hair. Well I have no problems with that, it's their own way of maintaining their locks. Because for me, I cannot take a day or two without washing and cleaning my head.

I have read all responses and find that most people think dreadlocks are "cool". I am an old southern lady, but I try very hard not to be judgemental of people's looks in their hair or dress. I am glad to know that you take care to keep your hair clean. That is commendable. Some people do not do that and when they have dreadlocks that can be distressing to look at. I confess to you that most of the time when I see dreadlocks I automatically think "dirty". I know this is not you and I am sorry I feel that way, it just hits me immediately when I see it. Especially when their clothes are unkempt and dirty looking. Soap is cheap and there is no excuse for being dirty. You also said that it costs to maintain your hair properly. No one should get these locks without knowing beforehand what they are getting into timewise and moneywise. If they can't afford it and don't have sufficient time to invest in their hair they shouldn't get them.
I am curious - don't you ever just want to take your fingers and run them through your hair? That would drive me crazy I think lol.
BTW - the things that I can't abide are people who smell bad because of not washing themselves, inappropriate dress and boys whose pants are falling off. Ridiculous! Offensive language is also a turn-off.
Best of luck to you.

As much as possible I want to look fresh and good in front of any person cause it hurts me when they asked "Are you still washing your hair? / How do you take a bath?". It's kinda sounds offensive for me but most of the people I encountered ask the same questions. Esp. women.
Yah, I missed the way I run my fingers through my hair. Believed or not but it's my hair that attracts most women, but right it seems like it moving on the other side so I started post this discussion to gain more confidence and move along the trail of my long journey having this locks in my head.

if only it would look good on me i'd definitely try it. but i have huge face (huge head, thin body like betty boop, hahahah...) and i was told i can't wear my hair away from my face like pony tails without bangs, or it would emphasize my big face a lot. dread locks pull your hair out of your face and it stays in that position. not to mention it's too expensive here especially the maintenance. so whenever i see people with dread locks i'd think, wow! he/she must have lots of money and few priorities to spend that much for his/her hair. i've seen several guys and few girls with dread locks on gigs. i think they're cool because unlike me, they don't mind how they look like with such locks. is the method you're talking about the one which produces a finger-sized strand? because i like those fat ones than the thinner strands. sorry, i don't really know anything about dread locking so i just based on the types i saw on most people.

Yah you're right, it'll cost you a lot just for the maintenance. But there are a lot of ways not to overspend. I'm talking about using some natural and alternative method in cleaning and maintaining locks.

Hi! I think it's cool. I'm always fascinated with people who have dreadlocks. Crystal Bowersox of American Idol have dreadlocks, I think it looks good on her. If I'm only patient enough to grow my hair, I'll sure have one. How about sharing your picture with dreadlocks...

I had dreadlocks for 5 years, just got rid of them last September. I still miss them terribly at times, but it was also time for a change. I love dreadlocks, I really do, and I always love seeing them on other people.
Congrats on hitting the 6 month mark, they'll just keep looking better and better for years to come :)

My boyfriend is a maori and when I first met him he had dreadlocks that were halfway down his back. I think my first thoughts were, hey bro when did you last brush your hair hahaha, I may have even said it out loud, I don't remember now. He cut them off a few years ago and is now trying to grow them back but I think a lot of people think it is cool to have dreadlocks but they don't maintain them so they end up looking dirty and messy.

hi mychickencurry,
Yes, I know plenty of people with dreads. I actually love the look. I have this one friend whose dreads fall nearly to his waist! Would I try it myself? no...probably not. For one thing I'm 54 which is too old for such a look I think and from what I understand, when you decide to get rid of them then the only way is to cut them off?? That isn't something I'd want to do. But I do like how they look on others!

hi mychickencurry,
I find dreads/dreadlocks really cool! I am amazed with people who can carry this look. Only those who are hip, cool and has unique personality could pull it off perfectly. I bet you look good in it. I have a very long hair and it'll be interesting to give it a try one day but right now I just can't. LOL. Because it is not allowed in my work for my job is a corporate setting and very strict to its standards. I am fascinated very time I see someone who have dreads, there is something hip about it and of course it is very bohemian which I think is really awesome.

Remember, dreadlocks needs a lot of patience and discipline. Patience because you really need to take the long way to achieved the perfect dreads that you want. I'm not saying my dreads are now perfect but I really want to have this journey and achieved want I want. Discipline because there are do's and dont's rules in the dreadlock world. If you break one of those rules you'll end up having it in the wrong way or it would result into a much long long way.
Tell me when you decide to have it, I'm sure you'll look pretty good on it.

My first impression when I see someone with dreadlocks is that I think they are a hippie. Now this is not true all the time, but most of the time it is. It also depends on how they are dressing if they're dressing in Abercrombie and stuff along that line I think to myself "hmm, that preppy dude has cool hair!". But when I see someone with dreadlocks that is wearing hemp shoes and baggy cargy shorts I automatically assume the worst. Now of course this doesn't mean you are a hippie, it just means some people MAY assume you are because of your hair. But personally, I think dreadlocks look kind of cool. The only downfall to them is that you can't wash your hair when you have them, which is kind of nasty. I also read somewhere that bugs live in them. And no I wouldn't get dreadlocks because I can't. I have straight hair and I am white so it would be harder to get dreadlocks. But if I could I would!

Well I guess I'm not a hippie, Actually it took months before I totally decided to have my long hair dreads. As much as possible I don't want to look as if I am a real Rastafarian. Though I love reggae music and I respect their culture, it is not the real reason why I decided to have dreadlocks.
:)
It's really nasty when you don't know how to wash your dreads properly and regularly. Before I came into this decision I already expect those little tiny bugs to migrate in my head but thank God I don't have any of those little things, I'm hundred percent sure because I visit salon regularly.

Ive seen a few teenagers with dreadlocked hair. It looked cute on them, and looks kind of cool. I just don't know if it would look good on me because I'm older, hehe. I'll probably just stick to my present hairstyle as I feel I'll look weird in that hairstyle because of my age.

Dreadslocks do not vary or choose age. It's how you will carry it and live with it. If you think you're not comfortable in having it then don't, well if you think that you want to have those kind of hair style think of it over and over.

I have seen a lot of people in dreadlocks here where I live. I must say, at first I feel weird looking at them but after a while I got used to it. I even had a neighbor once who had dreadlocks all the time because he was in this rhastafari band or something. Sometimes though I think dreadlocks are really cool specially if they are long and well maintained. The only problems I could think of about them is maybe there would be lice in there somewhere.
@mychickencurry (317)

Well having dreadlocks will increase the chances of having lice on your head. But there are good precautions to avoid this from having into your head. First you really need to discipline your self from not using any commercialized shampoo. Shampoo of this kind attracts more bugs due to it's fragrance and it will also loosen the knots in your dreads because of it's conditioning substances. Stick to the basic and more natural.
It's not like having dreads means you're having lice and bugs too. It's a matter of choice. If you'll take full responsible on your dreads or not.

Spaghetti? Wow that's kinda cool. Well your definitely correct it will really boost your discipline and patience as well. At some point having dreadlocks in not an easy go go decision. You really need to think about it a hundred times so you wont end up having regrets.
