Difference between portable and non portable apps?

This thought just recently came into my mind. So there are portable apps and non portable apps. What exactly is the difference between these two and why do I have to settle with non portable apps if there are portable apps available? Is there a certain advantage of one over the other? Disadvantage? Please help.
