Why do people stare at me when i say, I am an Atheist?

It's maybe because some people stereotype. And since atheist does not believe in any God, most people think they're up to no good since religion is generally seen as the moral foundation of a person. Personally, it does not matter who or what you believe in. We all are rational people and can think/decide for ourselves. What matter most is our actions and how we relate to other people.

it is because, you are not giving a clarity. you are creating confusion. there is nothing in the world, that could define either a BELIEVER or a non-believer. it is very very tough. so, I would suggest,.. instead of trying to define what is not clear.. it is better to keep low!... instead of declaring PROUDLY that you are an atheist, I would rather say, I don't understand or approve of the way people talk about GOD. is it not the same?

I thought you knew why people stare at you when you say you are an atheist. You are fresh game to be converted to their religion. Ask a millions questions. That will keep them busy. If they threaten you with a fiery pit for eternity, relax. You are a child of God regardless of any beliefs or nonbeliefs. You are still eternal. God doesn't really fry those kids. Mankind just wants you to believe that.

As the religious fanatics who replied to this topic have shown, the reason us atheists get this response is due to their fanaticism. Atheists are prejudiced against, there is no doubt. We are a minority. You don't need to look further than this discussion to see this. You should be proud to be an atheist, there is no reason to ever hide it. Instead, familiarize yourself with the arguments that religious folk will often throw at you, and the arguments against them. It will help in the event that they try to convert you or go on about what an evil heathen you are ;)

For Everything that happens in the UNIVERSE there's something behind (some may call it as GOD)... Without that something this universe can't float in the middle of something... we don't know the length, height or breadth of it... We are just getting Informations and not the Reality we consider as reality only because we are so confident in our inventions... If someone says "I believe myself, all good and bad things happen to me because of me" then he is indirectly saying "He is The God to Him" All Humans should believe in something (to himself/relative/statue/scriptures/anything) once started believing he is automatically becomes a Follower to that thing!!!

An Atheist is a person who do not believe in God. People will really ignore you because you are proud when you say to them that you're an atheist. How come you do not believe in God? Just see your body. It's so wonderful. The body members are all properly coordinated, all parts fall into its perfect places, the blood that runs into your veins, how your heart pumps blood, how greaty your vital organs functions...this indicates that there is God who wonderfully created us! No one can create anything in the universe except..God who calls not being into being! We human beings have 3 parts. we have a spirit, soul and body. (1 Thessalonians 5:23) When you eat you use your mouth as an organ or part of your body. when you think using your mind that is the part of your soul. your spirit is the deepest part in your being, an organ to contact God, receive God, and believe in God. YOu have to believe to believe in God.

The fool has said in his heart there is no God! Those who say there is no God is an Atheist. I have no idea. I think Atheist is the most unbelievable position possible. But that's me. I have no idea why anyone would be staring at you. Maybe you have toothpaste on your cheek or something?

Hello there, Simple, they are annoyed, be wildered, and will likely to stay away from you as soon as possible. although it's nice of you to speak of what you believed but people will take it negatively. you can't helped it, that's the way it is. one thing for sure, they don't give a damn what state of belief are you in, it's just that they won't be bothered by it. you can't expect people to talked back most specially they know you're atheist or any other religion for that matter, most hate debates and would go on with their way. they will ignore you when they are annoyed, i have seen cases of that too. hope you understand them.

thennarasu, yes of course, until unless you are not abusing their believes, no one will take care of you. how like you ignoring the people who really loves the god and believe the god exist, as like the people will ignore you if you say there is no god exist.. try to recall the newtons second law..

in the first place, in what situation are you saying you're an atheist.. i mean, what is your topic of discussion that make you said that to them. they look because you said something that oppose your idea to them,, i just thought.

For the same reason some people do it to christians, muslims, etc.... No tolerance, no acceptance, they choose to focus on others rather than focus on their own path to salvation, or their own path in life. It is just human nature to judge and criticize others, it helps us forget our own faults and problems. Sorry this happens to you, I wish humans would give more effort in acceptance.

Well, that depends on what you say, when you say it, and how you say it. If you come off sounding like you're bragging, then I wouldn't be surprised if people don't know what to say. If you interject the fact that you're an atheist into an unrelated discussion topic, or if you go around saying it willy-nilly, people may not take you seriously. That, or they've just never met an atheist before and are therefore unsure of what to say when you tell them what you are.

Hi thennarasugr, I'm not sure why anyone would be staring because more and more people are claiming to be atheists everyday. It isn't really strange because many think that the only other choice is to believe in a God who sends people to hell. Be careful, they may be out to convert you. Blessings.
