Do you just get your child their school portrait at the beginning of the year? Or do you also get one to celebrate every Birthday? I"m on the fence right now because I like the studio pics better & I get more for my money if I go thru the studio, but of course you have to get your pics thru the school's photographer to get them into the yearbook. SO would you just get that school pic? a school pic & studio pics or ??

My kids' school put the pictures in the yearbook whether you order them or not.. and I haven't ordered school pics since my oldest was in Kindergarten.. sad I know. Every year I say that I'll just take them to Walmart and get a group shot.. cuz really if I did single school pics our wallets would be way too full, lol! But then even though the studio pics are cheap.. especially at Walmart.. it's still hard to afford because at least one of the kids would need a haircut.. none of them have decent enough outfits.. blah blah blah.. you know how it goes. I haven't even had a professional shot done since the twins were about 18 months.. (except I have occasionally ordered the sports photos, especially my daughter's dance).

I totally understand where you are comming from with the haircut and outfits. I've been putting off my DS' 2yo pic because of schedules (so dh can watch the kids), money, and he's been scratching his face so one side has scratches every time I turn around.
Usually we do the group pic w/ Santa. I tried doing a portrait club dealie but never brought all 3 in mainly because of that coordinating outfits dealie to get a nice pic. My kids don't have similar clothes by any means.

I used to buy the least expensive school picture packet and that was it. They would put the kids' pics in the yearbook whether or not you bought them but I wanted pics to send to relatives because we had no family close by. They got more expensive every year!

That is what others say. The cheapest package at school is 2 5x7's for $7.50. Whereas I can get alot more if I get them done at JC Penny's and get their $7.99 package & I get to pick the pose.

I always struggled with that when my kids were in school. THe school pictures were always so crummy, yet outrageously expensive. THey never brushed their hair or posed them nicely. Then I was the crummy mom that didn't buy school pics and made the kids feel left out among their peers. For high school senior pic, I went to JC Penny and had them done there and they turned out so nice. I did make sure they were dressed nice and all for the year book pics, but other than that, I did my own "school" pictures.

hi my days at deciding that are long gone but I remember being in a'quandry but decided to get the school pic instead. later on my hubby and I had some studio pic taken of the two of us, they came out so nice. and too I am so glad we did that . I did not know at the time that my husband would have a fatal heart attack seven months later. so I do really treasure those pics as the last good ones I have of him, I have been a widow now since 1991. so good pictures are great to have always.

I think that you have the right to choose but the problem is that your child may feel left out when the other kids in his class get their photos taken and then they are in the school year book. If it was my kid then I am sure that I would have gone with the school photo so that he would not feel excluded.

My daughter is going to be in second grade this year and I've yet to buy any of the pictures that have been taken throught the school's hired photographers. The reason for that is that I think the pictures are terrible. Now, I've been an amateur photographer for a couple of years now, so I do the vast majority of my children's photographs myself. The only exception to that these days is Christmas pictures because I am the best with outdoor photography. However, last year I did their Christmas pictures myself as well.

I haven't done studio pictures in some years. I do get the school pictures every year. Usually they're pretty good. The twins' school does two sets, one in the fall and one in the spring.

I prefer studio pictures to school pitures becuase you never know how the school pictures will turn out. You figure some of the kids have been there all day and had recess before the picture are even taken. Not only are their clothes all wrinkled but they also look drained in their picture. At least with the studio you have a set appointment time and can make sure thier clothes are neat and clean before the picture is taken.
