Dunking

I'm 5'9, 200 lbs I can still touch the rim. When I was 14 I was really skinny and i can hang on to the rim with both hands but I never tried dunking. Now I'm 19, bulky, and slow. Do you think I can still dunk? I recently sprained my ankle a month ago.

I would say you're lucky enough to be able to touch the rim. I'm 5'9 too, and I've been doing a few trainings such as plyometrics, squats, jogs, etc just to be able to touch the rim. I don't know what's wrong with myself because it seems that my vertical leap doesn't get any higher. I'm also 5'9, 158lbs. The highest I can reach is still 3-4 inches below the rim. In fact, I kind want to ask you how you train your jump? I believe you can dunk though. Ankle sprain is just a common injury, even among NBA players. If you treat it well, it'll be back like normal. You should consult to a doctor if it's necessary. Good luck.

I think I have 32 inch vertical leap right now. I think if I just lose some weight I will be able to increase it a lot because I'm fat right now. My calves are pretty big. When I was 14 the only training I did was just play basketball and jump a lot at home and back then I can grab the rim two handedly. In high School I took weight training. I did squats, I was able to do 405 lbs 1 time 3 reps. My coach said whenever you lift weights be explosive, so I did. Don't do squats slowly but not too fast, make sure you do a full range of motion on squats. You have to show the bar who is stronger. It did help I was able to grab the rim and hang on to it but then college came I cannot afford the gym so as of now yeah. My vertical went down. That was my downfall, and now I'm also slow but I can still touch the rim. If you want to follow me then let me ask you first, how do you jump? two feet? one foot? because if you don't jump right then maybe your just not utilizing the strength of your legs. Right now, i'm working with my arms for jumping.

Interesting! What do you mean by showing the bar who's stronger? All I do is just putting the bar behind my neck and going up and down. My pace might be a little too slow, but I'll try to correct that soon. The way I jump is kind of hard to describe. I don't use one foot like how you do lay ups. I kind of use two feet, but I put more pressure on my left foot because it's stronger, as many right handed players do. When I try to use both legs equally, my jump got lower because I couldn't use the maximum strength of my stronger leg. I don't think my jumping technique was wrong, because I've check youtube many times and the way I jump is similar to those dunkers on youtube. I think it's just that my legs are not strong enough. I need to improve explosive strength like you said. How do you use arms for jumping? I know that you need to work on your core/abs to make you jump higher, but I never heard training your arms for jumping.

What I mean by who stronger is just to be confident that you can finish your reps your sets. And another thing make sure you don't stay on the same weights, make it progressive too like you add weights every week. I jump a lot because I like getting rebounds, so I basically jump on two feet. And i don't know how to jump one legged, even if i do it with lay ups i don't get as high. For me jumping on two foot was easier. I am working on my arms because I think it is a factor that may increase the jumping ability. It is just my theory that I came up with because when I jump I noticed that I lower my arms then explosively raise it in the air. Actually I can jump using only my arms without bending my legs though not as high maybe 4 inches but I think it adds to the inches you get when you jump. Who knows maybe it'll work. I am doing the arm motions with dumbbells when I jump, strengthening the muscles on my arms that I use when I jump. I never trained my abs, in fact I have a belly going on. All I can say to you is be explosive. I think you have a higher chance of dunking than me because you are skinny.

Of course you can. Maybe you should control you weight properly. Walking will be a good choice. Your ankle will be OK. Remember you are still young.
