Whell, when a dog is sheding, you can't stop the process. But you can reduce the amount of hair on your clothes, on your carpet, on your couch, by brushing them more often than usual, during this period of the year.
The ideea is the more hair you remove from your dogs, the less hair you need to remove from your home.
You can use a Furminator for removing the undercoat, the major source of shedding. This tool don't cut, but remove the undercoat hair quickly and easily. It doesn't hurt the dogs, and they look healthier after using Furminator.
Maybe this will help: http://www.furminator.com/

You're welcome. I didn't know about Furminator until this year, either.
I bought one this spring and I used it on my parents' dogs. Both of them seem to have now such a healthy coat! And there is no more hair balls around the house.
I can't use it on my dog, as Airedales are a non-shedding breed. Lucky me!

Has this become a chronic problem in your dog? Is your dog's coat becoming dull? Have you noticed any sudden weight gain or loss in energy?
I see many dogs in work that are affected by hyperthyroidism. Dogs with low thyroid activity see large amounts of hair loss, have a dull coat, gain weight, and have less energy. If you think this may be the problem with your dog I would consider at least calling your veterinarian. A simple blood screen (thyroid panel, T4, or free T4) can quickly diagnose a low functioning thyroid.
If your dog is hyperthyroid there is a simple solution. Dogs take the same medication that people take for hyperthyroidism. Dogs take levothyroxine (but at different strengths as humans). A company also produces a medication called soloxine which sells quite well. It contains the levothyroxine but is in a small beef chewable that dogs will eat right out of your hand.
Hope this helps!
