Board games...I bet you can't remember the last time you played

July 21, 2010 1:52pm CST
Most people owned board games such as Scrabble, Monopoly, Draughts, Backgammon or Chess then computers and the internet came along and now I never hear of anyone playing these games as they should be played, if they play them at all they play them online or against their computer. Do you remember the last time you played a board game with friends or family? I think there should be a campaign to make them popular again :)

What do I win if I remember? It was about a month ago and it was the game of Life, my son's favorite board game. We have others, but this one he absolutely loves and I am getting kind of sick of it and may check into a newer game for us to play. As if they ever become popular again? Maybe, if for some reason the TV and internet are not available, that is what I believe is replacing this pasttime activity and I am just as guilty and anyone else..

Oh yeah, that sounds great.. Problem is, I guess we'd have to pay for the plane tickets???lol The game of life has been around for a long time, it was a game we had when I was a kid too..:) And it's fun, just a little boring if you play only that game..

You will win...erm let me think...a weeks holiday for two on my yacht? I've never played the game of life, I'll have to look it up. I'm just as guilty of letting the internet take over my spare time as anyone else, shame really because I love to socialise.

Hi Autumngold, Welcome to myLot :) I played chess with my son over Easter as he was given a board, had to remember which pieces went where etc but we had fun, he went round and played a neighbours hubby too and they were quite impressed. Prior to that I think it was Boggle at Christmas. Huggles. Ellie :D

Sounds like fun :) I'm hooked on backgammon at the moment but hardly anyone plays it so I play online.

Hello Ellie :) I never quite got the hang of chess, maybe my brain isn't as good as yours lol. I play backgammon and scrabble, I play scrabble on facebook but it always seems harder on a board at home. I'm glad you still get fun out of playing games, I thought I was the only person who still owned a board game :)

When I was a kid, my parents didn't let my brother and me buy any board games other than Chess. I was introduced to Chess by my classmate in gradeschool, and my parents thought it was a good strategic game. I was only able to play other board games like Scrabble and Monopoly at school with other students. I wanted badly to have those games available at home because they were so fun! However, I only had one person, my brother, who would be available to play with me, because my family doesn't believe in "Family Game Night" or things like that. Playing games like Monopoly or Sorry with another person isn't as fun. Also, I've asked my brother a few times if he would ever play with me, if we got the games. He's always said "no". Now, I've met a friend who has Monopoly, Candy Land, and Checkers, and sometimes, if we really don't have anything else to do, we'll just sit down and play. I've once found Monopoly on the internet, and at that time, it was as if my life was completed. Lol, I know, but I really liked that game when I was younger. Now, I don't think I can find another free Monopoly game online that allows you to play with other humans, but I haven't checked recently.

I've never played backgammon for real before! I don't think I've ever been able to seriously look at an instruction booklet for it. I wish I could play it, though. I also play checkers, but I often underestimate the amount of thinking required for it, and end up losing, which is pretty sad. :( I'll be sure to look up the instructions for backgammon, though. It looks like such an interesting game!

Hello Musicxrules. I wish I could play chess, no one has ever been able to explain it to me. I play backgammon a lot and I love that game. I haven't played monopoly or scrabble for many years but I do like to play checkers

We have so many board games it is a shame that we don't play them more. My favoite was Tabboo, my husband gives some of the funniest clues with that it makes everyone laugh, but he gets mad cause no one knows what is talking about. I just got some board games for my daughter I really need to teach her how to play. She has played the hungry hungry hippos already and liked that I think it is time for CANDY LAND!!! I used to beg my sister to play that with me all the time. I was my favorite game as a child. We really need to start playing board games and card games again now if I could just find the time and get the family together. Thanks for the idea.

Hello Pastigger. Tabboo sounds like chrardes where we have to think of something then give clues and the others have to guess what we're thinking of...good fun. Board games are a great way to get the family together and have fun for a while. kids spend far too much time on their own so i love to get the board games out and drag them away from their consoles.

I agree. I do enjoy playing scrabble online or different games online but I would much rather sit with my family and/or friends in person to play. I play a game about 3-4 months ago. Played Trivial Pursuit. Love that game. But yeah, wish people could spend more time together rather than sit infront of the computer all the time. $-MrDollars-$

Yeah it is was better to play with people in person. Have better laughs and conversations together. I have never played backgammon before. I don't think so anyways. $-MrDollars-$

The last time I played a board game was 2 weeks ago. Every week or every other week, my friends and I get together for a games night. We each bring some board games, have a couple of drinks and make a whole night out of it. It's always a lot of fun. Before we started doing games nights, I couldn't remember the last time I played a board game.

Hello Cndn. That sounds like fun, especially with a few drinks. I should try to organise some of those nights :)

My friends and I in college played all the time. We played Trouble and Sorry. But we also played long games like Risk, Tanhausier, and Zombies

Hello Recklessdvo. I haven't heard of Sorry for a long time, I thought they stopped that one years ago. I'll look in some charity shops and see if I can find one, roll back the years :)
