The first thing you should be asking yourself is 'What software do I need for a particular job?' Then you should research what is available and what is useful. Only then should you compare the merits of free software and paid software. It is easy enough to use search engines to find where you can download.
That way you will end up with what you need at a price you can afford. It is stupid to say 'Where can I get free software?' when you don't even know what you want or need!
