Took my girls in today for their annual eye appointments. Both of them are getting glasses. My 8 yr old is ok with it, but my 4 almost 5 yr old is ticked off. She refused to even look at the different frames and faught to get them measured to fit her. Many people around her wear glasses, but she is afraid everyone will laugh at her. How would you recommend getting her to like them and not be ashamed to wear them?

I started wearing glasses in kindergarten as well... I remember walking into the classroom and everyone crowded around so they could try on my new purple glasses (my favorite color). It makes it a lot easier if she sees you wearing them too. I'd recommend going out and buying a cheap pair of non prescription glasses and making it a Mommy-Daughter thing to wear your glasses together.

I began wearing glasses at a very young age also. Not as young as your daughter, but at the age of 8 and i also resisted them not to mention that the kids in school did tease me. It is something that may take a little time. If she was diagnosed as needing corrective lenses, it means that she has problems viewing certain things at certain distances. Perhaps you can develop an activity that is fun for her and that will require her to use the glasses. At first you can allow her not to use them but as she realizes that she does need them and that resisting wearing them is hindering her having fun, she may come around. As a parent of a already grown daughter, i know that there are no definate answers. Have patience, she'll come around.
