Good things about a few kilos more.

I just read that it was a good idea to be a little overweighed. Not obese, but just enough as to "protect our body against many conditions that lead to premature death" so says Paul Campos, author of The Diet Myth. It’s thought that fat stores can be used to help the body stay strong during illness and recovery. It makes sense to me, as a pantry filled with good things to eat can be a blessing in times of need. What do you think, friends? Mind you, they don´t say we can spluge to death either.

Excuse me while I go and say thank you to my fat reserves. There, that's done. Now excuse me while I go and have a donut. :D

Hi marguicha, I definitely think being a little overweight can be, and must likely is, beneficial when someone is in a dire situation like being stranded without food for days. Your chance of survival is a lot greater if you have extra fat. You know that the body will go into starvation mode to conserve the fat when you don't eat every few hours. Of course it is important to try to have water in these cases, to keep from dehydrating. A little extra fat on the body of a terminally ill patient is also beneficial. Most times the patient loses the desire to eat or his or her stomach won't torlerate food or medications that are being taken. The extra fat will help prolong life.

Isn´t it a shame that all diets tell about is how to look like models by eating half an olive and a leaf of lettuce a day? No dressing, of course!

This is like music in my ears.. I am still going to lose some kilos or pounds of fat, but have to save a little for the "rainy day"..

I have a story to go with the theory. My niece lived with me as a teen. Her and my oldest son, who was driving, were in a car accident. It was very bad and they each spent an extended period of time in the hospital. Anyway one of the doctors told me that if my niece didn't have the mid-section layer of fat, her innards would have spilled all over the place! I think the body needs a bit of weight and would agree with Mr. Campos! BTW - How have you been?

In that case, the extra pounds saved her life! I´m so glad! I´m sure that the immune system doesn´t workas it should if you don´t eat all the nutrients you nedd. And you can´t be sure to the dot. Years ago, women used to have an amount of fat that was part of beauty. I never heard of anorexia when I was young. This interest in being skinny has to do with a culture more than with what our body needs. Take care and thanks for sharing!

Hi Marg.. All I can say is that I like Paul Campos very very much, despite the fact that I've never heard of him, I like his book The Diet Myth very much, even though I've never read it and I LOVE his message more than words can describe!! Thanks for cheering up my day, now I'm off to get a cheese danish, but just one! J

I agree, it's always good to have a couple of extra kilos on your body especially in winter when we are more prone to colds & flus...when we have a few extra kilos, when we get sick, we can afford to lose them.

This is very true, one of my friends had loy=ts of problems falling pregnant & then with the pregnancy because she was VERY skinny - it didn't help that she's a recovering annorexic who had been hospitalied for it either.

True. Healthyness is not just about having the exact weight that models have. Some too skinni women even have fertility problems because their hormones run beserk.

Makes sense to me. At least u have a little something to build from when u have a little extra weight. These people that looks like a good puff of wind would blow them away can't have too much of aa headstart w/a bad sickness.

What a relief to hear that! It does make sense...The problem with me is that a few extra pounds cause a problem with me trying to fit into my favourite clothes. I suppose I could buy bigger jeans instead of trying to lose weight...You know what? It sounds sensible to me! Thanks for the tip Mr Paul Campos and thanks for sharing it marguicha!

That is a problem. I have to solve that one too. But buying a pair of jeans won´t make us extremelly por and trying to lose weight, at least for me, is very expensive. It happens like this: clothes don´t fit. I serch for a diet. The diet won´t let me eat anything I like. I get stressed and anxious. I overeat to overcome those side effects. So: Hurray for Mr. Campos and let´s try to eat decently but not at he starvation level.
