I wonder if anyone out there can help me with this. I want to reformat my daughter's desk top which is an old one and has Windows XP on it. I have a recovery CD but it refuses to work, so my question is, is there any way one can reformat Windows XP without a recovery CD? Does anyone know if it can be done and how?

Seems like you have a Windows XP CD, you can go ahead and format your disk, make sure you have the licence number for that CD.
What you have to do..
1. Insert your Windows XP CD.
2. Go to your Bios, select "boot from CD"
3. Restart your PC, it will prompt you to press any button to boot from CD
4. A screen comes up prompting you to install a fresh copy of windows or reformat, follow the instructions for reformatting. You can also partition your hard disk at this step. It is advisable to do so depending on the size of your hard disk.
5. Let it reformat and just key in licence number when prompted.
6. Just follow the instructions when any comes up.
7. After windows is installed successfully, make sure the first thing you do is install an antivirus program for protection.
Good luck!

Thanks so much for the clear instructions, I'm sure I can pull this off now! I have reformatted my laptop before but it was different, it has Vista on it and Windows was pre-installed; I did not need a recovery disc then. Anyway thanks again for your assistance!

Thanks bluemoon. Very detailed instructions. I am also wiser now. Paula, now you have the right route. Hope you know to deal with BIOS. Do not forget to keep the license key of XP ready. Sometimes it is available in the files of the CD. So before you start installing, explore the cd and jot down the license key and then start the formatting etc. Wish you success.

I do not claim to be an expert. I did learn the above from experience because I download tons of stuff and was always hit by viruses.
I suggest you have backup help ready in case the instructions here are not clear enough or you somehow cannot follow it.

and on your reply of how to format..
You can download windows XP CD from net (pirated one) or you can buy windows XP CD original license and boot your system with that CD and install the OS.. You can download your motherboard, sound and video drive freely from the internet..

Well you can wipe your system with your windows XP CD na.. if you want to clean your all the hard disk drives.. just boot your system using windows XP CD and once it ask for choose where you want to install your XP.. at that time you will have option to delete partition.. delete your all the partitions and make it one. instruction are given on that screen only that you need to press D to delete partition etc.. and press C to create partition.. and if you don't want to delete your other data just select your C: drive as primary location and you will be asked to format it.. say yes there and reinstall the XP..

I have a Windows XP original disc so re-installing the OS won't be a problem. It is the recovery disc that refuses to work and I don't know how to wipe the computer...Thanks lovedude!

Hi Paula!
I am a big zero as far as the question goes but just dropped in to say 'Hullo'.How are you and your little one/ Does she know to use the computer?
In our country, I think chidlren are exposed to computers slightly late.In my son's school days he was introduced to this only after his eighth grade. And of course I was introduced to it only after I became old.
Hope someone has come out with some ideas here.We can always count on this forum.to mylot.

Thanks to the great responses I may be a lot closer to resolving my problem...Fingers crossed...I will give it a try tomorrow.
My daughter was taught to use the computer when she was in Year One and is very apt at it now. I have Intergard installed on the desktop I am trying to fix for her so she can't access anything inappropriate. She plays games and is a great fan of the Barbie website, she has a few educational but fun CD Roms so if I can speed up the old PC it will save us from buying her a new one for a while until she is a bit older. Always great to hear from you kalav!

I don't know much about this, Paula.. but I'm reading some good advices from other users in your discussion here. From what I normally know, one needs a recovery CD. You can reformat just like that, I suppose, depending on your computer settings, but you might lose important downloads and applications etc.

Yes I realise that the recovery disc is to clear the PC and the Windows disc it to install Windows. I am aware that everything on the computer will be lost and that's fine because I have already backed everything up on a memory stick. I will have to start from scratch once I've reformatted and reinstall software etc I'm prepared for all that, I just need to clear that computer first! Thanks zed and stine1, I appreciate your responses!

First of all you are saying the computer is an old one. As far as knowledge goes recovery CDs are meant to restore preinstalled OS, and it works on only that system. If you want to format you will need Windows XP OS cd. Even if you plan to format by any other method, you will still need XP cd for installing the OS. You may also need the motherboard cd for some drivers, as XP may not provided all the necessary drivers and will ask for OEM cd. Hope I have been helpful.

I have a Windows XP disc. Is it a matter of re-installing the OS on top of the old one? I was under the impression that I had to do a recovery first and wipe the PC before I re-install XP... Thanks hanuma34...

I forgot to mention in my earlier comment. If you have any files in your 'my documents' folder, pictures, videos etc, which you like to preserve then you better copy them into other partition. When the OS gets installed it goes only to 'C' partition. After securing all needed files format 'C' partition. Once you format 'C' partition, you will also lose all installed programmes, like MS Office, winzip, acrobat reader, printer software, modem software, media players like real etc. You have to reload them all. Choose the file system as NTFS. Use your XP cd and instal. I am telling all from my observations when my hardware man used to do on mine or other systems. I have never done the formatting and installing OS, although I have installed all the other softwares from CDs.

Whenever my Window XP gives me any problem I reinstall windows xp and it while doing so it formats it too. I know only one way and I told you. There might be more ways. another way is to try restore, but it would only work if it was not already disabled.

Hi gabs! I haven't tried again yet, I plan on doing it tomorrow. Hopefully the great responses I received will help me to do it! I have tried cleaning the disc. I am going to try to tell the BIOS to boot from the CD in the drive and see if that works...I'm learning heaps here! Thanks for stopping by my friend!

Hi Paula,
If you wish to reformat the computer you must insert a recovery CD or else things might not work in your favor.
If you, on the contrary, want to restore the system then go to the control panel, and proceed towards the setting and there is restore point.
I think you rather would like to reformat your daughter's desk top.

Hmmm...seems like your problem is already solved. Thanks for posting your problem here. It's a very big help especially to me who is a computer student. I got a lot of useful information even though I already know how to overwrite an existing OS or Format a computer and the other basics. But seeing things written here is very refreshing since it seems like I am reviewing past lessons. ^^
Have a nice day!

The best thing to do is to reformat it using Windows XP installer. Recovery option on Wnidows XP did not work for me, so I end up re-installing XP. You can install XP on a new partition on your hard disk, without affecting your old Windows XP, just make sure you create a new partition on the start menu of Windows XP Installation procedure.

There is another option for me, thanks! I am going to try this great advice tomorrow. I would like to completely clean the PC and start again so I will try to use the recovery disc and tell the BIOS to boot from it, if it doesn't work, which may be likely, I will try your good suggestion. Thank you so much drlanaria!
