Ever had a very awful job, where you were underpaid....

...but built your character in exchange? You may not be better financially but it helped you grow as a person? My job right now is not what most people would wish for but I found that somehow it built my character through the adversities that I face each day - including a less-than-adorable payroll. I'm not complaining on the amount. It's not lucrative but it's fine for a single woman like me. It's just not on-time in most cases!

I have it and now I am doing it. ==" I am a payroll admin in a international company. I never thought that I would have that much of salary in that big company. Fortunately that I have quite many good friends over there.. I do plan to quit, but still don't have any replacement for that..

Oh, so you're the one who gives out people's salaries? Do you also delay sometimes? Our finance officer here sometimes have difficulties finding funds to pay the people. And he gets blamed for it. Sometimes there are corruption issues (his doing) but I didn't want to accuse anyone without proof. Those are just speculations.

Yes I pay people's salaries. I never delay the payment for that. Yeap, don't accuse anyone without proof. Sometimes, it can be from the boss, you know? Like he has not enough money to pay. (I don't know the condition in your office, but it happened in few companies, as I know)

I used to work on an internet cafe with a very small salary (about a dollar a day - US that is)..What did I take the job? I just wanted to gain experience as some establishment wont hire a fresh grad without any experience, since I don't have a degree things came to worst, I had no choice but to accept it as not to have pass by time and grow old without any experience in job.

it's not bad i mean look at Jovit(the singer now) before he became a star he used to work in the Cart not to mention he's still studying. i believe we should all start from small. a dollar a day? that would be thirty dollars a month, that's good experience but you have to be there all the time. i believe it's still recognition able to have a job like that.

Jovit's success was a lucky strike and at the same great talent but not all of us are that lucky! But LK's right. We all had to start somewhere. Humble tasks like tendering an internet cafe. But in fairness, you get free internet access and do FB all day, you see cute DOTA-playing guys (who have bad mouths...duh), and you don't have to talk a lot to sell. People come to you. There is always a bright side of things.

Yeah.. when I was about 20 I lost my car and lost the job I'd had which needed my car. So I got a job about 2 miles away and had to walk to it each day. I was treated poorly, the manager actually once called me an idiot in front of customers, and of course I was not paid well, it was minimum wage. Normally I would have quit as soon as I realized I wasn't happy with it.. but without a car I wasn't able to find a new job, so I could not quit. I stuck with it until I found another job. I definitely grew because of that job.

I hope the next job you got was better than the first one? It does hurt to be called "idiot", or well like I said in my other post, "B!tch" even if it was said jokingly. I grew up respected even through words.

Hi, A couple years ago I had this job as janitor clerk at a Krispy Kreme restaurant in Quebec city, QC. At the beginning, I was enjoying it, but then it started to get nasty. The son's boss was working there and he started to make trouble against me for nothing. He was making on purpose to ruin my jobs. For example, after cleaning the man's and woman's bathroom, he went there and made a disaster in there. Then he was telling the boss, his father, that I didn't do my job there. It wasn't true, I always did my job adequately. So, the boss decided to yell at me and insulted me like in front of other employees and in front of some customers. I had a few other employees tried to support me against the boss and we were all saying that it was his son that put dirt all over the toilets. The boss never believed me and he always took his son's side. I was frustrated and I wanted to have a fight with this dumb kid. The boss was nasty with the employees in general, not just with me and when there was not enough sales, he turned violent: he was kicking the walls, yelling and accusing everyone of not doing a good job to attract people. He was such a dumb person, How can we force people to come eat doughnuts? Also, I was paid the minimum wage back then at 8$/ hour. After one or 2 months, my hours dropped from 35 hrs a week to about 15 hrs then dropped to only 8 hr a week. At the end, I was only doing one day a week. So, I have decided to go talk at the boss and the human resources and they couldn't talk to me. So, a week after that, I was preparing for my only day of work of that week and I got a phone call: I was fired for no reason and here in Quebec, they are allowed to fire people before a 3 months trial period ends, so I was fired just one day before the end of my 3 month trial. I was so disgusted and was so mad, but at the same time, I was happy of not working with bunch of losers over there. That was my worst job experience.

Wow, you were in such a bad situation, it makes my complaints seem like a waste of time compared to yours! At least life only gets really chaotic occasionally (and plain "just-sucks" all throughout) but at least we didn't get verbally and emotionally abused like you.

Hi, After my terrible experience at that place, I have grown up and learned a lesson: never tolerate verbal abuse from a boss. I should of made a complaint at the government ( the ministry of jobs) against that boss. Anyway, I will never let someone act cowardly towards me. I will take legal actions against them to protect my dignity and my rights. If I have another experience like that, I will go forward with actions and anyone who acts like an animal towards me or another employee will have big problems. These people do not deserve to be a manager and they should go through a therapy or something. With that bad experience, I learn a lesson and today I will never find myself into a situation like I lived a couple years ago. But life has lots of challenges and we should always be strong enough to go through anything.

I wouldn't say that the job was awful, but you are always underpaid in the music industry. The music industry is a very highly desirable industry to work in because no famous people always want to try to be around famous people. So there is high demand to work in the industry which creates competition. This competition makes the wages very low. Most people work their way in by starting as an intern working for little to no money. Then if they are lucky they actually get a salary that is on par with a manager at McDonalds. No offense but I didn't go to college to make that kind of money!

But I bet some music lovers will dive into poverty just to be in that industry, right? Or not!

theresaaiza oh yes the Nancy Ann Doll company. I had the dubious pleasure of gluing wigs onto ten inch tall dolls which sounds okay but believe me its harder then it looked. If you got one drop of glue on the hair you were not paid for that doll. I spent two weeks and probably made about thirty dollars a week which was very poor wages we were paid by each doll we fixed. So I got another job as a nurses aide in the Stanford Lane Hospital and there it was a great job for that time and that era. Then I went back to South Dakota and worked as a nurses aid in a local hospital which I really did enjoy too.

Hello Theresaaiza, the first job that i ever had was a volunteer and It wasn't a good start because my brother was a my boss. it's better to have that job, than have nothing, like me. being volunteer really cost your pockets but you know i gain a lot of experience being just that. and it's nice because you are single, and doesn't have kids.

That is why I think I mentioned it here or the other post that I didn't mean the small wage so long as we were treated like and as professionals. I have a lot to thank for in this company. Our boss, in fairness, is the most generous person I know but also has the ugliest temper.

Yes, I think that I have been in this situation many times. An awful job with a lot of tedious work. A supervisor who really did not know what he was doing. Co-workers who were unhelpful and a pain to deal with. That really is a formula to lead to a lot of frustration on my part, I'll tell you that. Plus the pay was not worth the agony. Still it was better than nothing. Of course, it did give valuable experience, in many ways. Even the worst jobs do that. Even if you imagine strangling various people that you are working with, because of how they are not only unhelpful, but unhelpful to the point where they actually prevent you from being helpful. Still it builds character and it gives experience, so there is an upside to everything.

I had before. It was a marketing company and point system. I worked hard for 5 months without salary. Time wasn't an issue back then since I am enjoying much with my co-workers. But then , when my mom said how was my job I realized that I am overstaying for nothing so I quit. It build my patience to wait something though that time I was waiting in vain.

Sure have, I think its a character builder, I've even gone back to a job that i was paid less than previously at the same place. I did it because I cared for the job and the bosses and I knew they needed help. As tired and overworked as I was, at the same time I knew that it was in some small way helping out the place i'd practically grew up in.

Like you I also just made a comeback. My salary was smaller when I got back. I came back because first I needed a job. Second, I cared for the company. BUT, I think I have done my part. Some of it were unappreciated. Time to leave and move on

My last job i was under paid. I started doing overtime and screwed family life. I knew that i was underpaid, but i was quiet as i learnt a lot from that job. I had discovered myself there and i learned to face challenges.

I know but then sometimes, by holding on to a job, yuo also tend to close yourself from the other opportunities out there.

I have had a job where I was underpaid it was my first ever job that I did. I worked at a shop as a cashier. They made me do lots of hard work and long hours and still they paid me less. I feel so angry now when I think about it.
