Is There Truly Such a Thing As the American Dream?

It seems that America has become the model for success in living and finances in the form of the ever elusive American Dream. Throughout history people from all over the world have come to this country in search of this dream. Many individuals argue that this dream does not truly exist based upon their perception of the dream. For example, one makes sacrifices for many years to purchase the home of their dream and in a moment of economic challenge lose the home. Others argue that the dream is an illusion. That when one finally does own those things that represent the American dream (Home, new car, boat), it is never truly theirs when they are new because these things belong to the bank and when they finish paying for these things they are either too old to enjoy them or the item is to old and the prestige is gone. Finally many argue that the American dream is not the material things one accumulates over one's life but instead, the American Dream is living life with the right and opportunity to strive for personal dreams and achivements. Do you think any of these are true? If not, how do you perceive the American Dream?

All of your points are valid. As I was growing up and yes I have been in US all my life, I often heard about The American Dream. It is my personal opinion the American Dream is what we consider it to be not the tangible material items.
It can be just the opportunity to have had a great education, a descent job and a healthy life. Because outside of this there is nothing really spectacular I have not had.

yes, their is a such thing as the American Dream. Its not just the achievement you reach if you do reach it but also knowing the possibility that it could happen. Its also not the materials one achieves if they do reach their dream, but looking back at what you did and being happy with what you achieved. theirs plenty examples of the American Dream. their all around me. some of what you said is very similar to what i just said. however, nothing is perfect or is without risk or chance.
