Okay...I know it's a gross topic. I have a kitty who is constipated. Poor baby. Anyway, I was told that to give him some mineral oil and canned food. The canned food because it has more water than dry. I know I should get him to the vet and I will but the vet won't be open until Monday and I'm trying to find something to help him ummmm....along the way until then. He's acting fine otherwise so a trip to the emergency room is not something I want to do....it would cost over $700.00, and I just don't have that. Does anyone here have any thoughts or experience in this area?

Hopefully he isn't constipated any longer...but I can offer a few suggestions to eliminate the problem (oops, sorry about the bad pun!). First, don't feed him just dry food. Dry food was invented for convenience rather than keeping the cat's health in mind. Give him canned food on a regular basis. Also, if he is an inside cat, make sure that you have "Kitty Greens" for him to chew on. I have a pot of them on hand for the cats to chew on when they feel like eating some roughage. The kitty greens will help keep him regular it's like humans eating salads, veggies and such.
As for getting him to poop, first like the other person stated, rub his anal area to stimulate the desire. Also belly rubs help too. Willy loves to have a morning belly rub and we spend about 15 minutes bonding and belly rubbing. As for giving them oil, it is an excellent idea, but I use cod liver oil rather than mineral oil. Mineral oil is a bit rougher on them than the cod liver oil. Also the cod liver oil is more tasty to the cats and they are more apt to slurp it up on their own rather than fighting you over that spoon coming at them. I also have used vaseline. I just put it on their paws and allow them to clean it off themselves.
You also need to figure out why the cat is constipated. It could be simply from too much hair in their system. Even short haired cats need to be brushed periodically. I brush my four fiends several times a week. I also make sure that they have plenty of water. I have a 3 gallon dish pan in my bath tub. I keep it filled with water and change it every other day. Keeping it in the tub also keeps the water cooler which all the animals seem to prefer.
Is he allowed outside to hunt? You might also want to give him a bit of milk every so often so that he can pass the hair from his "catch". Don't give him milk too often because it could constipate him. I usually give milk to the cats as a treat every couple of weeks.
Hope it's helped you out. There is nothing more miserable for a cat than being constipated. Keep an eye on him, because sometimes constipation and squatting in inappropriate areas could be a sign of a urinary tract infection. Especially if he might be peeing outside the litter box on carpeting, floors, furniture and other areas that he normally doesn't use as a toilet.
Hug your poor baby for me, and tell him it will be all better soon.
